Looks like it will be a tough year this year.. Want to construct a few Handicap acsess raised beds... I mean like 3 1/2 to 4 ft tall.. Will probably have somebody put them together.. Something this tall, I know I don't want 4 ft of earth.. Think I can put in a false bottom with logs.. I need a few ideas ! If anyone has any expierience with these PM me or post...

Do you have access to those packing peanuts? They make good lightweight fillers. I get the recycling center to save some for me for shipping plants. Also I have used old mulch in my deep containers then fill the rest of the with good soil. trudy

I think that I would use the log idea but I'd try to fill the voids with wood chips or somthing of the like. Then cover it with alot of news paper or a heavy landscape cloth. That way your soil wouldn't be washed down into the openings, and you won't have to top it off too much as it settels into place.

OK heres another idea. On the sloped area could ya dig down 18" and use that to fill you raised bed. Then theyd be 3 ft tall. Then just slope the ends to grade gradually, and your paths should stay dry! Also for your sides, do you have a lumber mill in the area? Iph so you could use slab wood phor the bed sides. Just a thought. I'll keep on thinkin bout it there CF.

We have saw mills all round here... I usually have been making my raised beds with 4 by 10 ruff sawn lumber.. Wood is no problem... As for the slopes, they arent in the place where I usually garden, they are too close to the side road.. thats out of the question... Guess I will have to go with the wood..

Don't know how tall ya are chickenfarmer. But if ya sit and weed ya going to have a heck of a hard time reaching that high. Made mine 16 and a half inches high. That way I can sit and do everything. If your going that high why not put a rock bed on the bottom to fill in. Test the peanuts out cuzz some melt in water to nothing.

Then I guess they should be 32" tall. You'll have to use the log method then, to get the height you need. Nope better make them about 24", that way they can reach in abit.

Have done an experiment fer ya CF. Iph you use the peanuts, use the "S" shaped ones. The "log" style dissolve in like 30 seconds. As oph 30 min, the "S" 's are still phloating along. But they are very very boyant!

I know this is an old post and CF is gone, but thought I would mention that I have made raised beds in the past for tending in a standing position. They were framed of 2x4's and were made like a box 2 ft wide and 6 ft long. A leg on each corner and strap steel in x's all atound for bracing, with a horozontal rail about 8 inches off the ground. The soil was about 10 inches deep in a metal liner and I had good crops of peppers, kale, radishes, onions and kohlrabi.

Sounds like you got your self some good raised beds. Should make gardening a whole lot easier, and enjoyable, for you. Good going and keep up the great work. Very proud of you. I exalt you for your hard work in building them. Is it possible for you to post a pic of your raised beds?

I am very interested in raised beds. Have been researching to no avail. Also sad to see so many people posting who are no longer here. Had no idea Crazy was gone.
If there is anyone on this forum who can give me pics and details about this I would appreciate it. And please don't say search the internet. I have and unless I am very stupid it seems that everyone wants your hard earned money to even give you an answer or pic.

Jeanette, although I have used many techniques for raised beds, this below is How it's done here at the Phunny Pharm. I like this because it offers flexibility, being able to re-design your garden year after year, I have other articles here somewhere, as do other pholks...Do a search! and I'll look up more info for you....
