I have a question, I found a praying mantrid egg sack and was wondering if there is usually a hole on one side of the sack or is it an old sack where they have already hatched out?Actually I saw three and they all had the hole on the side.Does anyone know?

My guess would be its an old sack,When hatching, the young crawl from between tiny flaps in the cases.

Phor anyone wanting to know about the Prayingmantis eggs now is a good time to look phor them. They need about 8 weeks of warm weather to hatch so usally mid may they will hatch phor me here in PA, you can phind them in bushes, weeds, grass, or even a poted plant, see my pics of the eggs I phound through out the years. This one I phound in the pampas grass This one in a poted shurb This year I phound one in the forsythia bush, I havent cleaned out the p-grass so might be a phew in them. Like XDX say's the babys come out the flaps. when warm weather hits it opend up. The baby's {about 50-200} come out n hang on a silk like thread, then off they go n hopefully stay in your garden

If you happen to catch them hatching, try to move the egg case around a little so they're not all released in the same spot. They're cannibalistic. Spread them out and they'll eat something besides each other.

So Glad your boys loved it Rita! That's right Mo If ya keep em in a jar after hatching they wil eat each other or even if there let loose in the same spot n cant phind phood before running into each other. I let them loose in the yard here n there wile there hatching. hatching can take up to 2 hours, theres always a few lazy bones still in there Ill also spray some water around so they can get a drink. Ive dipped my finger in water n let them crawl on it to get a drink. Its cute there lil heads go stright down
