Spuds , Did you get this aquaponic system up and running? I just got permission to build a system a the pond area at the church right next to the community garden grounds. We also want to do one at our house as a science project with our boy's. Any advice for newbies.my hubband is a master mind at building solar or wind or other systems so this should be gravy for him.My concern is the fish. Tilapia and perch is what we are looking at,the church pond is stocked with bass. Can't wait to read up and dig in!! We're looking at a March 2013 starting point for this project.

HMMMMMM. Well would you mind saying what went right and what was a failure? We're thinking 2 ways. 1 in 1/2 blue barrels inclosed system with tilapia and perch, tomato's,onions, egg plants... which we will keep warm with solar and wood heat the 2 weeks of winter down here. Then another on gravel beds,lettuce,kales,chards,spinach.... Just got that liberty back yard plans ordered and 13 different university pdf's and has anyone seen that set up in Califirnia and Chicago? Awesome set up using empty plots and the community.Even roof top aqua gardens, awesome!

Had a lot of trouble keeping the fluid concentration right, then had problems that were environmental,ie,trash into the beds, racoons, that sort of thing. I think they need to be done in a protected area.

OK,a bud of mine did a trial aquaponic system and it was a resounding sucess. You dont have to buy a bunch of chemicals or meters so its far simpler.
Im looking at hoophouse construction on youtube.I could set it up to run on 12 volt using just a tiny solar setup, and if solar doesnt shine, can run off a 120 volt to 12 volt inverter for 20 bucks.
Now to just find what I need for that hoophouse and I would like to try this for sure.
See most people start with goldfish in tanks for nutrient, then when they get the system working advance to talapia, trout, catfish, whatever.
