This is how tangled and messy blackberry vines can become when not tended. I was pretty ill for a while and couldn't find the right kind of help. This fall I may have them all cut to the ground and skip a year in production, but at least they would be neater. Still getting a good crop with all the weeds and lack of rain.

There's not a single thorn in the whole mess, they're thornless. ;D What I usually do is tie the new canes from the current year onto the fence until they reach the top, (4 ft), then clip the ends so they branch out. I like to keep all the fruit-bearing branches off the ground to keep the fruit clean and easier on the back. Yes I cut out the old canes usually, after the fruit is all gone. It was a crazy year last year, just didn't get everything done here and had a place in MO too.

Laura, I used to make jelly. When the kids were small I made preserves with the seeds in, then just jelly for a few years. I just gave away the frozen berries from last year, few folks want to pick them around here and I'm not able to get out there much. I think I have enough for a batch of jelly, then the birds will have a field day, probably.
