I have often wondered about growing these, as I love berries. But, on another site a lady is talking about her's and she says that they are not sweet and are bitter.
Now, the not-sweet part can be dealt with by adding sugar, but the bitter part gives me pause.
Has anybody ever dealt with these? Does the bitterness dissapear when the berries are cooked, or is it just hers that are bitter?

The Huckleberries that grow wild here (East Texas) are really small and mostly seed. I don't find them bitter, just not worth the trouble. I don't know if blueberries would grow in your area but they would be a much better choice. Although I have read that there is over 40 variety's of huckleberry. CF

"Garden Huckleberries" are a solanum, like peppers and tomatoes. The fruit is not ripe when it first turns black. Lots of folks think it is and this is part of the problem with taste. The berries have to be black a while then they turn a dull color, THEN you pick them. Also you will need sugar and something sour like lemon juice to get rid of the off-flavors.

I should have said you need to COOK THEM with lemon and sugar, they're just barely edible raw, yuk.
