I have been using milk cartons. I cut off about 2 - 3" from the bottom, and cut a circle in the middle. When I plant, I thread the plant up through the hole and bury the carton about 1" below the surface, and fill the middle with spoil. It helps to hold the plant up right. So far this has worked for me.

The cutworm feels all around the stem before it takes that first bite. If the stem is not tender all the way around, it'll move on. I just inset a toothpick or even 2 right next to the stem, halfway in the ground and half out. Sounds dumb but it works. Digging them up works too, as well as a good dusting at the point where the plant comes out of the ground with BT. It won't kill the critter immediately but he'll probably quit eating before he get's to the next plant.

Mo I've done the toothpicks, quick..cheap and they work... Cavey is right too...just cultivate often...We have been lucky and I have never seen any cutworm damage but I've seen all types of collars used.

Years ago I had a piece of 3/4 PVC pipe I cut in half the long ways, then cut 3 inch sections and I could put 2 of them around the stem of a plant, then hill up a little dirt to hold it. I was supposed to go back and collect them after the cutworm threat had passed but i think they all got lost or tilled under in a few years, lol. It sounded good, just wasn't practical.

I bought a few more plants. I'm going to wrap newspaper around them this time. I used Popsicle sticks that helped around all but one plant. There is always one cut worm that is determined I guess

After reading this whole thread, I just realized that I think this same thing is happening to my broccoli plants! I thought it was squirrels just being mean Basically, something is cutting into the stem at the base and "TIMBER!" - they just flop over. I've lost like 4 so far! I went out and dusted them with cayenne, thinking it was squirrels. But I'm gonna go out and try the toothpicks. Hopefully they won't start messing with my tomatoes!
