I need ideas on how to use the fresh nutmeg I just bought. I've never used it before.

Are they whole? They look kinda like a smallish hickory nut when whole, and about as hard. You need a grinder or tough grater to powder them enough to use. If they're already grated, just sprinkle on your hot cocoa or french toast or whatever. I like it on almost anything sweet, like apple pie or punkin bread too.

I need ideas on how to use the fresh nutmeg I just bought. I've never used it before. Do You have Whole or ground Bestofour? We use whole nutmeg, grind it fresh with a micro plane, or you can use a regular box grater.. Culinary....Ground nutmeg looses it's intensity quickly, so grind just what you need... Use fresh ground nutmeg ..with anything you'd put spinach in 2706 Of course there's the traditional nutmeg on top of eggnog..but try mixed into coffee, tea, or cocoa. Better yet, use it to add a touch of spice to homemade smoothies or to make your glass of orange juice more interesting. Meats.. in savory dishes can bring out a delicious contrast with spicy and salty seasonings. this includes stir fry. Chicken..poultry...again, it adds an unique flavor.. A little goes a long way... MEDICINAL And I quote:

I have the whole that I'll have to grate.
We don't drink eggnog or coffee so I'll try it with chicken and maybe on apples.
Thanks.

Mace is the name for the very outer layer of the whole nutmeg. Don't eat mace or nutmeg by the handfull. It is a SEASONING after all. Here's a link for bunch of stuff I didn't know about it. homecooking.about.com/od/foodhistory/a/nutmeghistory.htmI knew that in about Columbus's day spices were worth a lot of money, but who wouldda thunk wars would be fought over them?

Ahem...back in the sixties, I seem to remember some people taking larger than just a "seasoning" amount of nutmeg, as in making a tea with large amounts and hot water. In fact "my latest nutmeg trip" was an expression I heard more than once. Why would I remember this and not the rest of the sixties? LOL LOL.

I have started putting a little nutmeg on my scrambled eggs. It seems to make the taste a bit better BUT since nutmeg can trigger an acute psychiatric disorder I'm not sure if I'm hallucinating and really not even fixing eggs or if I am in fact cooking the eggs, I'm not sure if I'm dreaming and not really adding the nutmeg. Life is so hard.
