Well I got my onion sets and a quart of sourwood honey. Best tasting in my opinion but this jar is maybe one grade lower (darker) than I wouldda preferred. I'm still reading the books by Luther Burbank. He mentioned in one that whale oil was the best thing for killing off garden bugs, never said anything about other things used for that. He passed in 1926 and whale oil probably got pretty hard to find about then too. It's from a mammal, does anybody know of a source for it or something close? (not fish oil, way off). I wonder if the northern natives that are allowed to take whales for food can sell the oil?

I've grown 2 seedlings of 6 different tomatoes. Planning to grow one plant to maturity. I set out the first plant today, a Stupice. It's my early tom for this year, skipping the Early Girl. I hope it does well for me in the container. If I can get one plant put out each day, by the time this warm-ish spell is over, I'll be halfway there. Got 3 peppers to find a bucket for also and a few onion sets, cilantro plus whatever grabs me at the garden depts. Feels good to say I started my garden! Happy gardening to all of y'all for 2013

I asked GF's g'daughter to unload a couple bags of potting mix from the car for me. She did and stuck around to help me with the garden. We got done in less than an hour what I had thought might take the rest of April to accomplish, just a few minutes at a time. Now I have a piece of black plastic down on the ground as a weed-killer and guard, 10x12 ft. Got most of the containers in place at least. Too windy to set out any more tomatoes, maybe today or tomorrow. I need to take a picture but it feels so good to have this giant leap forward in the garden. Kids CAN be helpful, just so un-predictable, lol.

I read somewhere that spring moves north on average 15 miles a day. I dunno, that's probably close to real. We have passed our "average" date of last killing frost, but who knows when a phreak phront will roll in? We've had phlurries/phrost in May. MAY! They warned of lows last nite. I bet it wouldn't do anything, won that time, 38 deg. My peppers won't like it but they won't die, just sulk, lol. Still have 3 Ghost peppers to put out or sell/give away and my backup tomato plants. I did start some Black Cherry tomato seed last nite, no idea where I'll put them but I need at least one.

Morning everyone, there was frost north of us last night, which is past our last frost date also. Nothing here though. It has cooled down though, from the high 60s & 70s to the 40s & 50s. Hard to get a handle on the weather this spring. Our Magnolias are in full bloom, and the Peony's are starting to sprout....so there saying it's spring . I have to take a soil temp in the field to see what is going on with soil tempeture.

Extreme windiness, cool nites, sunny days etc have all conspired to wreck the pequine plant I had in a pot. They are a little sturdier than tomatoes, I think. Maybe it will come back if I leave it alone a while. Nevertheless I started new seeds last nite just in case. I can't believe I pulled a dumb-ass trick like that! ALWAYS harden off yer plants before you set them out pholks, always. I did get some help to re-arrange the rows of my containers so I can add a squash plant or two and also have space to move amongst them using the walker. Looks like I will be using the walker more or always by summer, oh well, beats the wheelchair. A couple more weeks of "marginal" weather and I'll feel safe in starting squash and cukes. Anybody know of OP varieties of yellow crookneck or zuc that are of a bush habit?

Thanks Penny. They were nice. It never occurred to me to cut tulips and bring them in but they lasted a week, longer than some. Dropping petals today, so they went out.

It will most likely come back, I have had a pepper plant stripped of it's leaves Mo...unless it froze.. which is what it would do here...We, were "blessed" (tortured, beaten ) with another 3 inches of snow last night..and strong winds...gusts up to 30 mph. Come on Spring

I've been wanting some of those tall tulips, like 2 ft or more, since I saw them here in a flower bed. Today I found a place that sells them. Hope I can get my order in before they run out. No gardening today, too wet. 72 and sunny tho, so maybe tomorrow I can get out there.

I have a tall tulip but it isn't as tall as they say it was supposed to be. I have one regular tulip opening and the tall one is starting to bloom also. I hope it dries out for you soon!! I went mushroom hunting and it was too wet behind the horse run to get back out there. I was kinda disappointed after all that walking!! Not a 1 mushroom!! No wonder your back hurts Phil the weather beat you up!!
