Our cucumbers and squash have tasted better than they ever have. I covered by garden spot with a ton of leaves this year and tillered them in a few times over the winter. Wonder if that made the taste difference. I usually don't use so many leaves because they're oak leaves and somewhere I read not to use too many.

The 2nd planting of squash is coming in now. I've only had to replant 3 of the 14 original plants. This is the best year for squash we've ever had. I love straw bale planting. Wonder if it will ever be this good again?

The squash and cucumber seeds I planted last Thursday have sprouted. It's a million degrees and dry so this may be too good to be true.

It's 12 million degrees outside. Do I want to go to the garden?

I think the big garden is finished except for the egg plant and maybe a Cherokee Tomato or two but I still have a squash plant, cucumber plant, and 2 beautiful tomato plants that I planted in the straw bales as soon as the original squash was finished.
I don't have a green house per se but I'm trying to figure out how I can grow carrots over the winter.

I got 2 cucumbers off the plant in the straw bales. We ate one and it was so good a fresh tasting. The straw bale tomatoes are still green and I'm not sure if the cooler temps will hurt them or not. We'll just have to wait and see.
My newest plan is to get Johnny to bring home 4 more straw bales and put them in my little house that I call a green house but it really isn't. I grew lettuce in pots in it last year and had fresh lettuce all winter and my parsley over wintered nicely in there. This year I'm going to plant carrots, lettuce, kale and spinach in the straw and see what happens.

I got a good tasting red, ripe tomato off the lone tomato plant growing in the straw bales. I figured the frost or cold would have gotten this plant but it looks great.

Penny, I never put straw bales in my little house. That tomato plant is on the straw bales I put out during the summer and grew the squash on. When the squash was finished I planted tomato a few tomatoes.
I have planted lettuce, carrots, kale, and spinach in pots in my little house. I'll take a picture.
