Lucky Girl on this last day of September! I've been looking for a composter and decided to look on craigs list. A guy had one for sale for $50 he wrote that it was kind of large with a stand, tumbler type. I decided to take a look see after work. He and I chatted about plants and flowers,& composting for about an hour, and the results I've had over the years. He said since he lost his wife he hasn't been interested in composting, he did it previously because SHE wanted it for her flower beds. Finally He said awwww heck just give me $35 and I'll load it in your van for you! \o/ yeah! SCORE!!!!! It's Huge, and the boys and I are getting started right away. I have 12 1/2 cut cinder blocks I'm going to lay out and put it on top of. The Stand is heavy and very sturdy ,, I'm Pleased as Peaches I have a composter again !

Please let us know how well it works for you. BY the size. you should be able to make lots of compost. Just remember the 4 ingredients, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Water.

We have some in a pile almost done, takes 2 YEARS to break down pine needles, wish I had serious manure to put in it,most chicken poo goes straight onto empty soil areas being prepped for next season. So,Ima gonna look too for one, thanks for that Diane.

Spuds... If you can get your hands on coffee grounds, use them as the nitrogen part. It works great and heats up the pile / heap. I have had mine up to 150F+.

that's good advice I grab the coffee grinds from work every day,, even the filter, I cut the filter in to small pieces. It won't be long now I will rake the leaves and bag them for the compost, I will even rake and bag neighbors yards for extra bags to get me though the winter and spring for my 70% brown component, as I said earlier, coffee grounds and tea bags( cut up) I grab from my work place, Spuds It sounds like your friend needs more Brown(dry, paper, leaves, lint, etc added to his compost to help dry it out and start it cooking correctly. I go by 70-75% brown (dry)to 25-30% green( wet). Sometimes I'll throw in a hand full of bone meal . When it's too Dry and I add water I will also add a little of liquid seaweed. ( just to give it a rich boost) We also have huge bowls of peanuts at work I grab the shells of peanuts too,, those people think I'm nuts( pardon the pun LOL),, I tell them give me their uneaten salads, and breads from their lunches and snacks,, hahahha,, When the compost is complete I'm going to take a bag to work. would you believe all 95 people at work have never composted and at least 30 are gardeners, and Have never seen Black gold at all, what till they smell it!! It smells awesome soooo earthy, can't wait till spring LOL/

Very nice composter Diane you should have no problem turning it with the type gear system on it. Just remember what CP said about balancing material Leaves, grass, house hold garbage..like Orange peals, lettuce, banana peals, and other vegetable scraps. Besides coffee grinds spent tea leaves are a great source of nitrogen. The ratio is important.
You should get many years of use out of that composter, it's well made. Good luck with it!
