geez that's quite a line up Penny...too soon here, heck we can't set plants in the garden till Memorial day or there abouts...we typically start the onion seed the last of January...the tomato and pepper seed in late February.. the plants are almost too tall to work with by then.. when do you set plants out up there?

I am so lucky that I have my own little space at the shop to start the seeds, or I wouldn't have started this early.
I'm hoping that starting this early, the plants will be bigger and therefore if we have wonky weather again this summer, that the plants are just that much bigger and might be able to withstand it better...we'll see.
I cant plant out here until at least May 24th, that's our last frost date.

I don't have a gigantic garden like some of you and last year my grandson and I planted seeds in cups, of course over planting cuz I figured some wouldn't make it, and every single seed germinated. I had more plants to transplant than room to put them.
Penny must can and make salsa.

I have posted pics of my gardens on here Sheri ....I started my seeds early for me this year, because last year we had such a wonky growing season that when I put my plants into the ground this year, I want plants that are bigger and setting flowers, not the little plants that you get at the garden centre.....and I want more tomatoes for canning, and freezing. Plus I don't keep my plants here, they're at the shop out of the way, and with plenty of room and light.

I need to start canning. Do you have a pressure canner? Is this the wrong place to ask this question?

I need to start canning. Do you have a pressure canner? Is this the wrong place to ask this question? My take, buy the best you can afford, its cheaper to buy quality in the long run. Now I wont slam other canners only to say they have gaskets that will go bad,All American canners have no gasket and will be heirloom items. So if you can, spend the money and get the best,All American. If budget a consideration,no problem, get a presto or other, will also work excellent. Then.....canning is soooo easy, and so much fun if youre a foody, only wish we had started years earlier. We made Der Wienershnitzel, a chain hotdog place here, their style of chili.Had chili dogs last night, dang but they were excellent. Of course youtube has so many vids it is easy to get into it,its like you have 3 million Grammas to teach you.

I have both I have a water bath canner and a pressure canner My pressure canner is tall so I can stack jars Sure helps when ya got alota beans! Lol And If I want I can use it as a water bath canner It also help if you use Ketchup jars. My Son in law brought his stuff he put in ketchup jars down here to can them because it is higher. Has helped in alot of situations! At one time I have had 3 water bath canners around here but for some reason 2 of them got holes in them. I want to get a new one but will watch garage sales and such!

I left mine in the attic when I left my ex...said it's been years. It's probably still there but I'm sure outdated with rats living in it. If I decide to can I'll have to spring for a new one.
What did you can in ketchup bottles? ketchup? I was always concerned anything but canning jars would crack.

The ketchup bottles are made for canning. They shouldn't crack. You can buy them, buy the lids and the lil thing that puts the lids on with. My kids love to can! I guess I learned em right!

Penny, why so many different varieties of tomatoes and where do you get all the different seeds? We all love tomatoes here, and I like to try different kinds each season, I do have some staples that are a must in my gardens, but I try and change it up each year. Plus we eat them throughout the summer, some I give away, make salsa with, freeze or whatever. I get my seeds from all over, different forums, seed banks, swaps. The tomatoes that I have listed for this years grow, doesn't even come close to the tomatoes that I have in seed form here.
