still getting cukes and squash. Some okra and beans. The tomatoes have bottom end rot. Last Friday I sprayed liquid calcium on them but I'm not convinced it a soil deficiency since I prepared the soil. I think it's the sudden, intense heat.

All our tomatoes every year always had Blossom end rot on the 1st tomato. Not sure why but they did. We always knew to pitch that first one.

Bestofour , Did you can yet? Just wondering how you did. I have a lil story here also. I was at a friends that cans all the time ,just started the last couple years. She made her own mustard , some blueberry bbq sauce and I cannot remember what eles. Anyhoo I was with her one day ,we were canning Corn beef and potatoes. Got it all canned and she kept touching and messing with the cans. I was like Judy no no! Just leave them set. But She even tried to tap the lid, saying it helped! I said Noooooo lol no helping the lids seal! So my lesson was to myself really! This year I am going to help her and teach her as we go. I will take my "Real" Pressure canner over to her house.

w8in, I canned tomatoes and blueberry jam. We haven't had enough beans to can any. We eat them as fast as I bring them in. I've also frozen some tomatoes.
My used to be mother in law always tapped her jar lids after canning. She said if they hadn't sealed yet it would make them seal. One of my friends turns her jars upside down after canning. She says it makes sure they seal.

BestoFour ,your not supposed to tap or turn them up side down. You want them to seal up right not have a "False" seal. If they don't seal you put in the refrigerator , or eat right away. Blueberry Jam! Yummy!

The green beans have finally come in and I've been canning them and more tomatoes. I can't believe it's the middle of August and all this stuff is still producing.
I didn't turn my jars upside down but my friend does. Says she's always done it and isn't going to stop now. She's the first person I've ever heard of doing that. The book says to leave the jars in the canner for a while (can't remember exactly how long) then move them carefully to the counter and don't move them for 24 hours. That's what I'm doing and so far everything has sealed. I canned a lot when my girls were little and once in a while I'd have a jar not seal and would use it for dinner. Wonder why that happens.

I am not sure, sometimes a defect in the lid or jar, sometimes I know I do forget to wipe around the lip of the jar. I know alot of people do put them up side down.
I used to can like crazy when the kids were home. Used to make a loaf of bread a day also. Only thing I never really got into canning was corn. Seem to be such a PITA alot of work But we grew it and ate it thats for sure!

Brought in a bunch of tomatoes this afternoon. There are a few little squash and a few blooms on the squash but I think their time is about up. Why didn't I think to can squash early on? Might get a few more cukes before it's over too. A little rain would help.

I had a really nice summer squash while I was up north got it at the farmers mkt. It was Heirloom and Organic it was really good! It was striped likw I light green and dark green. Not sure what variety but man I cut it up and put a lil salt and lemon on it cooked it on a cookie sheet in the oven. My son was over who only took some to be nice just about gobbled up the whole batch it was really good! So the next day I bought some more did it up on the grill almost the same way. It didn't have the same taste must of lost some grilling it. Or it was because of the kind of squash. Who knows? Next time we go up there the Farmers Market should still be going I will see if they have any more.

A few people had squash at my Farmers Market this past Saturday. One of my friends found plants at Lowe's and put them out 3 or 4 weeks ago and now has blooms and baby squash. I put out a few seeds that came up, then it rained 5 inches, and now the little plants are gone. I'm not trying again this year.
I've taken everything up. I may plant spinach in the raised beds. Not sure if I want to mess with it though.

Spinach Yum! I have tried to grow squash before and it never works for me! And I hate to fight with plants. Must be the ground because I tried pumpkins before and they just didn't work!

To tell the truth I'm kind of glad it's over. Seems like I worked harder and more often this growing season than ever before. Could be that I'm just feeling older. We're moving the big garden closer to the house and putting in another raised bed for next year. I can't make up my mind about planting potatoes again. They are so cheap at the Farmer's Market and I don't have a place to overwinter them anyway. I like having a few out of the garden so maybe I'll just plant a few. Also may not plant as much okra. I don't know yet. Just thinking.

We planted a couple of potatoes one year. it was a test just to see if I could cut up and plant a red potato from the store. So I cut up 2 small potatoes , Planted them, got a small bag of potatoes out of the deal. Never planted any more. It was a "Just to see" Deal lol like you I can get them so cheap at the market.

BOF..we are still amazed at our potato harvest this year! We had exactly 5 little green ones. The rest of our crop was GREAT! We have 3 tators that weigh just shy of 5 lbs..we did nothing different this year except plant them WAY late compared to other years. We planted in May. Not Good Friday as we have in the past. We have way more then we need so we take them to the farmers market. Today we sold 15 pounds..give or take a pound or 2. Cheap too. Folks here do not realize what they have at the markets..esp when the food is raised the way we do.
