Ok gang.. Ideas... SCENARIO.. every winter it's a struggle to keep the ice from freezing the corn crib (now Massive storage) DOORS..from freezing close.. the elevation of the doors is about 8 inches lower than the melting snow and ice..so..water runs in when it melts..and freezes the doors... This year..the way the storms hit..I couldn't even get to the crib.. So the doors, both of them..are in about 8 inches of ice.. worsening the situation...these are the only doors as thje back side is wired closed from the inside... Making the situation even STICKIER the side that we use...is on the north side..so NO sunlight... Now..every tool I have except snowblower..is in there including the chain saw...which I could crawl through the opening that once went inside to the chicken coop...get it..saw my way through the ice to open doors (or shorten the doors a bit) dtb got a Flamethrower type weed burner...but I don't think that's a good Idea dtb BIGGEST PHEAR DTB at the rate it's melting here the garden will be clear and ready...the TILLER..will be frozen in da crib IDEAS..PLEASE will get a close up tomorrow or later today...

So they are freezing from the inside because of melting snow? Is it a dirt floor or cement on the inside? Dave lil man cave door froze this winter he put salt down along the side of the door. His slides tho. Our neighbors barn door froze this year also. Dave went over there and put salt down for her so she could get in.

Sounds like a labor intensive situation bro. The ice is going to be a real PITA to remove but that seams to be the only suggestion I could come up with, without being there to actually see what it looks like.
One thing I would do after you get the doors opened and that is what w8in mentioned. Sliding door. that is what we have on all of the barns and never had a freeze up. Out side of redesigning the crib and doors all together. You could build a ramp to the crib and raise the opening to accommodate the new height, but you have to adjust the floor height with a inside landing and step. That doesn't solve the problem now I know. Best thing I can come up with is. Start chopping!

JC, Ima gonna take some pics in a bit (when I go out to CHOP) shake and we will ponder da pics... re-design...yeah I had a thought...will detail the thought when I get the pictures... Wendy...they are sliding doors...and I have used salt in years past to keep it from re-freezing..I also used the chainsaw to cut the ice away agree I don't know what I was thinking...the TILLER being in there is bad...BUT.. what I wasn't thinkin' about was.... The FRAME FOR OUR LARGER GREENHOUSE..is in there too...will need that in 2 weeks... dtb

Phil: Sounds like your situation is much more complicated then I thought. Your weather conditions and snow and Ice for that matter are much more severe then we experience here so getting the right combination together is going to require more thought and information such a photos and such. I will say though, our doors are protected somewhat by a three foot overhand and faces the S/W which gets little wind from that direction. You may need to construct some sort of snow barrier like a snow fence to protect that area from drifting. From the picture you did post,it looks like the wind blows across the front of the building from left to right of vise verse.

Yea so it is a sliding door.. you have some salt and a shovel a sunny day won't work. Above 20 will because if it is too cold salt wont work. can ya boil some water and throw on there to help out?might melt it enuf??? I hate it when this kinda stuff happens!

Hmmm, looking at the front of the shed, it almost looks like you need to make a peaked roof above the doors, and some wall/s that come out a few feet to protect the doors more.
Depending on which way it faces, do you find it gets more snow from one direction? A retaining wall of sorts might help.

Past Due Time Bro ...got em' now though... Are they vining plants? How'd they tie you up??? I think you need a lil of dis P.s. Wendy...I do have salt down Hmmm, looking at the front of the shed, it almost looks like you need to make a peaked roof above the doors, and some wall/s that come out a few feet to protect the doors more. Depending on which way it faces, do you find it gets more snow from one direction? A retaining wall of sorts might help. Penny most of the snow here comes from the north (like from CANADA) what happened was overtime, the poplar trees someone planted has Raised the elevation of the ground about 6-8 inches above the elevation of the crib doors (poplar roots come up outa da ground..and when they don't..they HEAVE the earth..up) Looks like yer just gonna have to make ya another door Bro. After ya get to yer saw. agree I'm thinkin so bro... I got an opening a little small...but one I can crawl through and fetch my chainsaw... I'll try cutting away the ice first... Then..ifin that don't work... I'll make an opening annd worry about framing in a door later... Here's a pic of the door...the cement block is halfway buried..the bottom of the doors is about an inch above the ground...so..they be several inches of ice... Here's a possible NEW DOOR location...( I can saw straighter than I can draw) Or here...studs are on 24" centers...ok to get tiller out (after I make a ramp) BUT...not big enough to get assembled trusses of greenhouse out Another shot of the situation... Upside..it's 40° and raining....downside..it's gonna be 27° tonight dtb Normally Pholks I keep all the snow removed from the front of the crib and out past the point where the melting runs towards the crib..But, this year...the way the storm came, the amount of snow...the speed of the wind (40+ mph at times...) closed the way to the corn crib down... I knew it was going to be bad...just not as bad as it was...so, before the storm...I moved the snow blower to the garage so I could be sure of getting to it...
