Feb 29, 2016 at 12:48am Willow, BestoFour and 1 more like this. Post by spuds on Feb 29, 2016 at 12:48am I may be missing in action off and on.I have a new project, bought a 1970 Honda CT90 with 2160 miles on it,but needs wiring massaged, tires,an oil leak, tires, brakes, cables, etc etc etc after long sitting.Got all the parts. Right now Im in wiring, made an LED headlight for a 6 volt system using old sealed beam bulb and a Harley Davidson H4 12 volt headlight bulb that actually can fire up on 6 volts, but NOT 5.8,very cool. Now to get a reliable 6 volts to it,at 5.8 it doesnt run,so looking for where the resistance is.But I have some work arounds if I cant get it to do it stock, add some larger wire and bypass ignition and it works,i will get it. Also no problem when running it puts out plenty juice, but I want parked lights...because...umm...because I do .Then all LEDS for running, brake and turns signals im adding,1970 didnt have them. Runs pretty good though, carb will take some tweaking to compensate for altitude and changes in gasoline from 46 years ago, todays fuel runs much leaner. Its yellow,Mrs calls it the Honey Bee and Old Yeller. When I ride it its the HORNET!

Its really coming along.
Ive done brakes, tubes, tires, rebuilt and shined up front forks, all new cables, all new LED lighting, added front and rear turn signals.Just waiting on a rear light bulb and new battery.
Ive upgraded the battery from 5.5 amp hour to 11 amp hour.It has a rectifier, which is like a voltage regulator.Im going for a more modern one so removed it from battery box in frame making room for double the size battery.New smaller sized but much better rectifier will be on outside of frame but still covered by battery box cover.
Adjusted carb, purrs like a kitten now.
Removed chrome muffler and guards and shined them up.They are in excellent shape which is lucky, just a black replacement muffler is 150 dollars,IF you can even find one, chrome no longer made.Mine is rock solid, only small amt surface rust that was removed. It had to come off anyway as I have to remove top end of motor when I move on to oil leak repair.Just replace old gaskets.
Been hitting paint with rubbing compound and polish prep,Its shining away.It will still have a few pock marks from stone chips where there are little rust spots.thats OK,its a very honest 46 years of patina, dont want to destroy that.Paint is only original once, and that is quality old enamel I think paint, good stuff.
When ever possible Im using new old stock original Honda parts, for example Honda gaskets whenever possible.Quality beats any aftermarket stuff. And is 2-3 times cost, but on 10 dollar part its money well spent getting pricier Honda goodies.
I could get China mirrors for 25 bucks,I found brand new originals from Australia for 75,the difference in quality is night and day.
So not much left to do,add a couple LED bulbs, clean it up,add mirrors and fix oil leak, cut a few wires and put in rectifier and I have a 46 year old, collectible model motorcycle. It has 2168 original miles.
Wont be much longer before we are putt putting around town and playing around on the mountain trails. This is like a new bike.It was very capable little machine then, and it still is now,its a really really well engineered and designed bike.I think will have around 1500 or so total invested when all said and done on bike itself.

I had one of those way back in the day....they are like a tank....you are doin the right thing by usein Honda parts. hdsk tky I joined a CT90-CT110 forum. They tell me to do something,I do it! Those old Honda parts, wow are they quality.Like the fork seals, never seen finer (rubber?) seal than those, far heftier than the aftermarket junk that is shot in a year. The Honda 90 bikes in various trims, street, trail, scooter,is the best selling vehicle in the history of the world!! Yup,there is a reason as you said, they are built like tanks. Read a real interesting article where the author interviewed a bigshot from the early Honda days.He said they built them for a 7 year lifetime and figured they would hold up 10 years.By then everyone would have moved on to newer bikes so thats all they planned for.Said they had no idea the bikes would hold up over decades like they have, they too were shocked at the longevity. Mr Honda was a genius much like Henry Ford,a true innovator and a man who loved his company and his employees. He was always investing in improving the company and the lives of employees, managers didnt get wealthy, they just made a bit more than the workers.NOBODY can be found to speak ill of him. When Honda started after the war, people were starving, you better believe they loved Mr Honda and their jobs.It shows in those bikes thats for sure.

The bike is complete and perfection.Absolutely runs like a showroom fresh vehicle.
Spent 2 days riding on a dry lakebed with nephews, perfect place to break in bike, and I did. After tweaking the carb we hit the sweet spot, perfect idle,no hesitation, instant acceleration and pulls hard to redline....well,as hard as a whopping 7 horsepower can pull.
My LED lights work like a charm, its as bright as any modern bike of today is.
It was very windy,15-30 mph with 45 mph gusts. The bike can do 45 mph.I hit 55 mph with the tailwind and she has perfect riding manners. The other direction.....28 mph in third gear.
The project is done, just a few cosmetic things left to do.Now have to acquire good riding gear, learn to ride, pass test, and get my permanent license
The secret word for today is....PERFECTION!

The guy with the gloves flaked out on us,after a 1.5 hr wait no show,no call,so that didnt work. Then we drove out another 20 miles to look at some jackets. He had 2 joe rockets that fit,a mesh that fit me,wanted 50 dollars, and a NICE leather Joe Rocket Sonic that fits wife really well.Wanted 70.So i asked, whats your BEST price if I take the 2? He thinks a bit, tells me how wonderful they are, then says you did drive a long way,how about 80 for the pair? SCORE!! Very cool, got that need covered, awesome!
