I love that. I've planted sunflowers 2 years now and a few will grow but most don't. What's your secret? The biggest and best one we had was one that just showed up somewhere I didn't plant it.

yep thats bethany.. the black kitty is our beloved pal, he was one of the all black litter, we didn't name the rest of them because we couldn't tell them apart, but pal was a lover so we could tell him.. one of the other mean old toms chased him off, he wasn't a fighter. he's been gone a couple of years now, but i'm still hoping i had one come back two years later.

i had that happen to me last year sheri, the volunteers that come up did better than the sunflower house. i'm not sure what i did right/wrong. make sure you get the giant stripped kind, i soak mine overnight so they sprout, also they need full hot all day sun. i think i have to move the sunflower house the trees have grown and are shading it. i think it probally has to do with how much sun they are getting because they are sort of a pain some times the birds drop the seeds and the come up everyware. jerry about pooped a blue bead when i told him i planted sunflowers. it's that farmer weed thing you know.

I use the black oil sunflower seeds for my bird feeders and today I see a couple coming up over where we lost a bunch of trees and bush last summer from the storms. I was so excited! I thought of this post right away and had to get in here to tell you! ;D

From where do you guys order your seeds?

I just get mine at WalMart from the pet section in the bird seed. But the black oil are the little small flowers. Jeanette is saying you want the striped giant for the big heads and that is at our local feed store where we pick stuff up for the farm.

well i wouldn't reccomend the martha stewart seeds from k-mart that's the kind i used last year now it could of been a number of things but they didn't do worth a crap. i think you can pick up seeds just about anywhere. the ones you get in the bird seed arent the big giant ones but i bet they are still pretty. i always get the edible kind and roast them my family loves them, the birds like them too.

I agree, I got Marth's silver corn seeds from the big K last year, out of about 118 seeds, only 26 germinated. Burpee isnt to bad, their live plants comeup great. Next year we are getting seeds from a local supplier. I hear they are good seed stock

A good place to look for GIANT sunflower seed is P+P Seed, go to the website, also the giant types sold in Pine Tree Gardens, seed catalog are real good ones and they have a variety

Tallest sunflower I ever grown was about twelve feet high, the heads never seem to get too big.

I've never had them that high, but have had the heads so heavy that they snapped...

You might try proping them up if the squirrls don't get to them first

Thanks Phil, I will look into that. The heads on my 9 footers got to be around 12-13 inches in diameter.

I "saved a life" too once back in the early 80's. Was at a store looking at house plants and there sat a half dead Norfolk Island Pine. Didn't know what it was at the time, I just liked it and knew I could save it.
The looks I got while purchasing it was hilarious. People were looking at me like I was crazy for buying a half dead plant. It was a challange and I took it and succeeded. Nice plant... Needs lots of sun and a warm place. Don't have room here for one in the winter though.
