Well TennOC, I have to admit, you have made me think...I used to raise Many types of sprouts, because I have lots of seeds...but I can't fer the life of me, remember WHY, I haven't been doing it lately...What type Is you Favorite? I have some suggestions...Ya Know I betcha Laura would really enjoy this too!
Of course, Alfalfa Sprouts are the common sprout most pholks think of and you find in stores and resturants
these have threadlike shoots with green tops. They have a nutty flavor. great in salads and sandwiches. Then the next one most our familiar with is,
Bean Sprouts
usually Mung beans are used, But one Can experiment! they have small light yellow leaves and a silvery white shoot. a subtle nutty flavor and lots of crunch when added to stir-fries, soups, and salads.
Actually tho, I Really Like some of the ones that are less known (go figure) Squinting
Broccoli were recently found to contain many times the cancer fighting compounds of broccoli ! Thumb
Cabbage - they have the same cancer fighting properties as broccoli. (try some 'red acre' seed for some neat red color!)
Radish Sprouts
sprouts that have the zippy taste of radishes.
Sunflower Sprouts
sunflower sprouts have a mild, sweet flavor, adding crunch to any dish.
Pumpkin Sprouts Yo....Douglas! ;D
sprouts can be eaten raw or lightly toasted. Excellent when added to salads, soups and bread.
Wheat Sprouts
These sprouts cook quickly and are often used in recipes in place of whole grains.
Lentil Sprouts
not as ‘spicy’ as the Radish sprouts, lentil sprouts have a peppery flavor. They are often used in soups, stews and casseroles.
Fenugreek sprouts with an unusual flavor
Mustard hot! Use with discretion
Green peas/Dwarf Grey Sugar Peas A good thing to do with the left over seed from last years garden They are fat and sweet!
Onion –really adds flavor to a mix. best to start the onions a few days ahead of the other seeds, If used in a mix, they are slow to sprout same for Leeks
Garbanzo beans or better known as Chickpeas can be grown as short sprouts. hummus can be made from sprouted chickpeas.
Winter wheat sprouted until 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, then ground or chopped and used in baking. It can also be grown as wheat grass in soil and juiced, or chopped for use.
As With Most Things I PREACH...Organic seed stock is the BEST; However, just make sure that your seed for sproutingHas Not Been Treated and of course Enjoy
