I've already got a 9 1/2 month old Shih-Tzu, Sadie. Saturday I went and got a little boy Shih-Tzu I have named Leeroy. He is soooo cute! Sadie hated my guts for bringing him home. She wouldn't talk to me for a while. She would sit on the loveseat and give me the stinkeye. She's warming back up to me now tho. And starting to play with the puppy, too! Isn't he cute?? :0)

Yep, thats why I got a boy. By the time he's ready to breed, my girl will have had a few heats and we'll be good to go!

You think thats right? I guess you best learn how to breed dogs before you try. I've been breeding dogs, cattle, and a few other animals for years. He's "good to go' as you put it, at about 9 months old, I sure hope youre bitch will be at least 3 yrs old before you let him breed her. Otherwise you're askin for trouble with the pups.

Well, my goodness......That was kind of a harsh way to put things.....She will be 2 when he's "good to go" and it's nto like I can't wait to breed her. I was told that after 2, it's ok to go on and start. By my vet. Soooo......I guess they know what they're talking about, they know the breed and the details of what is safe for her. I seriously doubt they would put her in harm's way.

Well I guess if you wish, listen to your vet. I've taught mine things. I breed 300 brood cows. Not much different than dogs or any other animal. Do your research and find out the sexual maturatiy of animals. 3 yrs is the amount of time that it takes for an animals body to become mature enough to produce healthy offspring. So if you wish to try before that GOOD LUCK!!!

Okay, seriously, I don't see the point of belittling me in a constructive manner for taking my vet's advice. I'm not flaming you or anything, but dang, I really don't know you or your vet to know what your actual level of expertise is on this subject. Perhaps my vet has had different training than you and yours. If my vet says 2 years and she can start breeding and have HEALTHY offspring, then I'll take that good luck you gave me and I'll run with it. And How long is a cow's gestation period? Much longer than a dog's and many other animals. So I believe that makes it a bit different than other animals, especially a dog. I've done my research and have found that 2 years is an acceptable amount of time for her to mature sexually. I'm glad you taught your vet things. That might not be saying much for their level of actual training....You can't come off all high and mighty about breeding my dog and getting on me with the "You think that's right? ?" and I guess I "best" listen to what the trained pro in my town (which deals with domestic and farm animals of all kinds) who I've been dealing with for years. Don't mean to sound peed off, but you come off like you think you're better than your vet and I, so I figured I better tell you that I'm not following the advice of someone I don't see a degree on the wall from and who hasn't dealt with my pets before. Kthxbi.

OK troops, lets relax some here. The minimum age for most dog breeds is two years, but that is minimum. there are factors inherient to all breeds tho. And with these smaller breeds, health issues are prevelant. Then you have to consider your female.
Is she mature?
No one would want their Daughter to get pregnant, at the earliest possible age. However, every year reports of 12 and 13 year olds having babies abound.
We have all seen these young mothers succeed, and do very well, we have also seen some Fail miserably, causing problems for everyone concerned.
2 years old is the minimum age for some of the tests to be performed as to the animals general health and fitness. and these tests will have to be done for you to "ethically" sell these pups.
and then, you must be able to devote time to these new additions....MUCH MORE TIME, if the mother is not physically and MENTALLY capable of caring for the pups. So, I am saying, whenever you choose to breed, is really Your choice. Make sure tho that you are doing so for the right reasons, and can provide the tme, devotion and $$$$ to care for them, should the worst case scenario spring up. Have homes lined up for your pups in advance.... there are so many homeless/sheltered dogs in the world already.

Well my "level of expertise" as you put it, is we've breed 4 World Champion Jack Russel Terriers in the fly ball competition. So I do know a bit about animal breeding. The first ting about being a successful breeder is the lineage of the animals you're trying to breed. If they don't come from good genes then you will have sub-standard off spring. So hopefully you looked into the background of BOTH animals before you try to breed them. Are these dogs registered AKC or any other registered grouping? It'll cost roughly $500 per pup to register them or you can't say their a true breed.

My puppies are CKC registered, I have seen parents and grandparents of both of them, as they were on site. They do come from a good and strong gene pool. I did a bunch of research on the breeders before I bought them to make sure of anything that might carry on to pups. The ancestors of my pups were all CKC registered as well, so I have them on the pedigrees. You basically said you knew more than my vet. I'm not breeding for the money, I don't care about that as much as I do the breed. I love this breed and want to see it go on and provide families with the love of a Shih-Tzu. These are very smart, loving and caring dogs and I would like nothing better than to share them with someone else. You just don't know how much I am in love with this breed of dog, I don't think you could find a more loving and capable person to breed them. And I do have ethe time to care for both mother and pups, I am a homemaker and stay at home mom, so I cam here 24/7 and have all the time and energy to put into helping my girl raise a litter. We also have the means to do so. I literally already have homes lined up for the first litter, even if it's 2 years from now. Even if one or two didn't sell, I would raise them in my own home, I would never abandon any puppies. Ya gotta think, I am the one who feeds every freakin' stray cat in the neighborhood because I just think that they might not be getting fed. I don't care if someone is feeding them (which I'm pretty sure they aren't getting enough if they are being fed, there's a lot of them), I do it too. I attract every stray and new litter after weaning from this. I love animals in general, but am especially excited to do my part in giving someone the most awesome breed of dog there ever was, IMO.

Ohhh, the Pup is Adorable.. and the Female is precious too.. My Aunt had one and she absolutely adores hers.. They are Preciuos little dogs.. To me, It doesn't matter what the Breed is.. I'm not Partial to any certain breed.. I find Mutts are Just as precious, and great with Kids... I feel some of your Pure breed animals of all kinds, have there quirks... All my animals were strays or set outs, I I think that is Just mean.. You wouldn't just set a Child out if you didn't want it anymore. and I believe that is the meanest thing you could ever do to an animal.. Why not just Shoot it and Put it out of its misery.. Thats alittle better then setting it out to starve to death or get run over.. Its sad howmany animals have to live life that way.. The only Dog on my Property that is a Full bred is my German Shepard Sampson.. I got his mother from a Pound as a Pup.. she was German Police.. She was the last of a little and the owner's couldn't find a home for her and needed to get rid of all there animals as they had to move.. Being in the big City they can't have Alot of animals in small apartments, so she did the right thing, instead of setting the pup out.. so I got lucky there and adopted his mommy as a pup.. The Daddy of Sampson was a Pure Black N Tan German Shepard.. He was a Police Dog in his early years in Ohio. The story on him was Cavey was buying some goats from a friend and this Friends Cousin had the dog on the Police force.. The Dog served his time on the force and was retired and this friends of Cavey was lucky enough to get him... anyway when cavey went to buy the Goats he seen the dog on a Chain tied to the Barn and his friend said that his wife just had a baby and Was scared to have the Dog around.. So Cavey said don't tie the dog I'll take him.... He was the BESt Watch Dog for Children you could ever want... he protected Desiree's Mommy through the years from everyone and wouldn't let anything happen to her. Desiree's mommy used to Bath in the Creek at one time and the dog would stand as a guard and let her know when Cars or anyone was coming.. Neither of these dogs had Papers but they were both as Good As Gold.. so we kept one of the Pups.. Sampson.. His Mommy and Daddy passed a few years back but I think of them often.. Sampson turned out great and actual is the only Dog on my Property that you DON'T have to raise your voice to...Point and he does it.. Now all the Rest of my Dogs are all Mutts But I wouldn't trade any for All The Money in the world.. And thats my thought on Pure Breds... I'm a DOG Lover so I am Partial to all Dogs... Cats I can give or take they are not Lovable enough for me.. they are too much like a Spoiled Rich City Girl..and I could do with out them also.. LOL I still think you have A Beautiful Pair of Dogs and Wish you all the Luck in the World.. Sorry For Rattling everyone.. You May Go Now .. hahahahaha

Well... everybodys got a point. When you are talking "show" dogs every thing goes to a MUCH higher level. Everything about the dog has to meet stanards etc. I know a man that raises coon dogs. They are sold all over the USA for huge amounts of money. The "culls" from the litter he kills. Sounds cruel too me but they want to keep the breed "pure"... The average breeder mostly does it for the love of the breed. And they use common sense if they are wanting to sell puppies. I'm with CW. Most of my dogs I got because I like them and then loved them and they were just mutts. I have seen some pretty smart little mongrels. I paid $400 for a poodle once...I was expecting her to have some sophistication about her or something since she cost so much. No ... she was just a dog and wanted to be a dog. I would shampoo and clean her up and she would be so cute, till I let out to pee... Invariably she would find something to waller in. I told her she had papers, she was registered, she cost lots of money. She didn't care, when she got outside she had a good time. But I wasn't looking for a show dog. Those are waaay out of my league. And there is way more to all this, I just think Yall are thinking from different levels of the breeding business.

I may have paid a high price for my Shih-Tzu's, but that doesn't mean I am expecting more out of them than I would a mutt. I am not raising them for show, just as family pets. And I know Sadie loves to go out and run through my garden when we go outside and I'm working in it, getting all dirty. But, she's having a good time, so as long as she's not totally tearing it up, I'm cool with it. And I am breeding for the love of theShih-Tzu breed and to give another family the same love and affection my babies show me.
Thanks, caveman and cavewoman, I think they're mighty fine pups myself! And so sweet!

Cute puppy, nice dogs Mickee. I am partial to bigger dogs, mostly herding dogs myself. I have a border collie. Now she came from champion bloodlines, but we didnt want to breed her. We got her fixed at 6 months on the dot. I have seen what it takes to breed and care for pups. I have a friend that breeds bulldogs, wow thats a lot of work. Bulldogs will roll onto their babies and not know it, so she has to transfer them back and forth all the time for feedings. Anyway, good luck with your breeding project! I hope it is successful.

I think Shih-Tzus are just precious! I have two friends with them here in town. I'd love one, but the house is small, and we already have two cats... Mickee.... you go girl!! As for the Border Collie....now there's a smart dog!! My husband had a sweet female Border before we were married, but had to leave her with a friend when we were out gigging one weekend, and she hung herself on his fence! SOO sad! My husband cried and cried!!

Continental Kennel Club=CKC And than you! Leeroy is getting so big! And fast! He wasthe smallest in the litter, but I'm willng to bet heis bigger than the rest of them now. He's a barky little turd, too. Sadie has always been pretty quiet, I knew I couldn't get that lucky twice He's just an attetion getter. If you all for Sadie, he comes running to intecept. He wants you all to himself.

What a cute puppy. I wanted a fuzzy puppy, but we have too much sheep grass and stuff to get tangled in the hair, so we wound up with the Mini Dobie.
