My Mom and sister have made these for yrs. We've had these in our house all my life. Never thought of how much work went into them until I got grown and watched Mom at it. She takes cotton and tears it into strips about 1 in wide and stitches the ends together and then crochets them, or whatever you call it. I tried one once it cupped up like a bowl. LOL
My mom crocheted rag rugs. We sewed the rags on the machine. She had a big iron crochet hook. I learned early on how. Then I learned a 5 string braid and it is called weaveing and had to sew the rags by hand as I went but not the braid are woven in. Rags went farther and flater rug. Mom had a frame she wove rugs on. String up with carpet warp and the weave in the rags. The as a teen I made some shaggy rugs on the sewing machine. Mom gave me the rayons and that type scraps that she would not use in a quilts that came in the material bundles from the Goodwill. Know nothing about toothbrush rugs.
Lucy thats the same thing my rug did, cupped up like a bowl lol I think with crocheting its all in the tention or gage? or what ever its called. I tried knitting a rug and did better. its lays flat Dont know ifn this makes sence but phor me, with crocheting all the loops, holes ect ya have to judge on your own how much to pull through/ tighting up/ ect. ,,, With knitting, the needles are incerted through the loops/ holes etc. so it kinda dose the judging phor ya. Colorado I once looked at my curtain rods n thought about using them phor a phrame to try n braide or weave a rug lol ;D I figured I better not, knowing me Id break my rod
I know on crocheting round rugs you have to increase the number of stritches as you get bigger and if do too many it could ruffle. And on straight rugs you have to be carefull on ends to not increase any stritches so stay the same all along. You have to crochet evenly.
After I was married I started a rag rug and first thing husband said I DO NOT LIKE RAG RUGS, That ment I was not to make but I did and I put it on the floor and he came in and saw it. And said it lays down flat. I told him rugs were suppose to lay down flat. That was what he did not like was rags that did not lay flat.
My dad made the frame for mom. I can make one and you use finish nail for the string on each end of frame. Kinda like Navaho frames but she had to weave the rags in and not a shuttle. Faster with a shuttle. I would love to have a big loom I could do rags on but cost too much and takes room. My 24" looms does not take rags. I did have a pair of wooden knit needles one could use rags on. I never tried. I am not sure still have or not,
Shaggy one was only good for light use like redroom. We did not have carpet. I made one for my sister and we mailed it to her and she said she was not putting on the floor but on the bed to keep her feet warm.
I have not tried rugs out of these new type materials. Stretchy stuff. I do use in quilts but not small blocks. Like 8".
Thats phunny you told him rugs were supost to lay flat LOl. ;D yea your right your supost to increase stiches with crocheting, Im still learning. This spring/summer Im gonna put my all in to learning crocheting. I need to finish a few projects first. next time I make a rug im using lighter fabric, I used sweatshirts and it made it thick enough to trip over.
