Plus one where I stuck in a seed to fill in a gap in the melons, to bring it up to 19!
I never got a single melon, perhaps because it has been a cool summer, but I certainly did get good pumpkins!
I gave 3 to a friend of my son's, 2 got damaged, 3 young, green ones got frosted and will be chicken food, 3 are on display by the scarecrow my daughter set up, 5 are inside waiting to be stored, and the last few are still in the garden.
The chickens are in seventh heaven as I gave them the first one today. I threw a small one on the ground to break it in half and I gave them both halves. The rooster jumped into the middle of one, right on the seedy part, and gave the dinner call.
The 3 hens ignored him in favor of the commercial feed at first, but once the edge was off of their hunger they ate pumpkin too! It will POSSIBLY last them 4 days, and then I will give them another!
I also got MAYBE 10 butternut squash. That might be too many for us: I will decide next week after I serve the "pumpkin" ice cream and the "pumpkin" pie. The squash that I cut up today should give me some of each. I MIGHT tell the kids later that they were eating squash: possiblyin a couple of months or two? I can just IMAGINE telling the kids they are eating squash ice cream. LOL! Not until they decide they like it!!!!!
