HALT... YOU NAY NOT WANT TO KILL IT!phirst look at him, does he have lil white egg lookin' things sticking out from his body like this one Worms that should not be killed and tossed out are those carrying these small white cocoons . The cocoons contain the pupae of a small wasp which parasitizes hornworm larvae. although they are parasitized by a number of insects. One of the most common is the small braconid wasp, pictured here, This worm is not only a dead worm walking, ne is also a nursery for these helpful beneficials. Larvae that hatch from wasp eggs laid on the hornworm feed on the inside of the hornworm until the wasp is ready to pupate. The wasps will kill the hornworms when they emerge from the cocoons and then hunt down other hornworms to parasitize. You probably will only see one or two, take a stick and lay em where the birds will see him, or squish him with a clothespin, if you feel you should. BT, works if they are young for you so inclined, here's a list of chemicals that will kill the worm, bees, beneficials, earthworms, and any other life forms in yer garden. # lambda-cyhalothrin (Warrior 1 EC) # cyfluthrin (Baythroid 2E) # carbaryl (Sevin XLR Plus) # esfenvalerate (Asana XL) # spinosad (SpinTor 2 SC) # permethrin (Pounce 3.2 EC) # indoxacarb (Avaunt WDG) # fenpropathrin (Danitol) Again, If I can't pronounce it, I don't use it. Everything ugly has a perty side tho...Because this Ugly ol worm, turns into this the Hummingbird Moth

Not to be a hijacker, but...I have had great luck with BT-try it first before you get in there with the chems. I only applied it twice all last summer and had NO problems with hornworms. (And I'm like you, I can't stand the crunch or squish of bug smashing! Yuck!)

Beautiful cukes there Doug! Back to the bugs, tho...this was a grayish brown looking thing. I went back out and found one more-just a REALLY small version of the one I flung. I also found some small brownish eggs with the white things attached, like the one in yer pix up there Pharmer, on the underside of a leaf and then I found kind of a greenish egg, almost mistook it for a dew tiny dew drop, on the upper side of a couple of other leaves... I have NO clue what I am doing here with tomato plants!!! BTW, what is BT? The name of something?

The birds have already started on the flower heads, older ones that is, so I'm sure I'll see more come up next year on their own

Hey that Moonflower looks pretty pretty.
What sort of climate is needed to grow them in. I guess they wouldnĂ˝ l;ike the odd dump of snow on them.
