Jay: Sounds like you have a good handle on garlic growing, that's great. I'm always open to any new ideas or verities that are doing well. My soil is much like yours a good sandy loom although we are quite a distance from one another it seams the soil is similar. We do have a shorter winter here then I think you do, although this winter was a pretty bad one, normally there not that bad. Never the less it didn't seam to effect the garlic in any way. This is only my second season growing garlic so I hope I'm not giving the impression that I know all that much about garlic growing, I'm a newbie at this and I love growing vegetables of all kinds. Maybe it's a little more then a hobby for us but we are learning new things every season.

JerseyCub,
I always try to keep an open mind about gardening like I do my job. Try to learn something every day. With that being said I've learned when trying something new it is best to find someone you trust and then start with their method. This is my second year of growing garlic on a more serious basis. Then you can tweak it too find what works best in your garden. When I've jumped out and tried to mix several methods at once is when I have usually ended up with a big mess to clean up. I do research what I can on the internet. And read any gardening article I find. If Estonian Red does as well this year here as it did last year I will send you a few bulbs to try. Large cloves and bulbs. Good storage life for a hardneck. Jay

Jay: Yes I agree with you to many opinions can be confusing and distracting. I worked in Civil Engineering for 14yrs and I learned long ago to many hands in the soup spoil the pot. You are rite though, Always pick the brain you can trust.
I have one verity of garlic that I purchased from a local organic farm that looked pretty good last fall, trouble is I'm not sure of the verity...I have to get over to that farm and ask. Trouble is the people that are farming it are a bit eccentric, and well not that reliable with there information.
