I've got a manure pile that is probably 15 years old or older. . Is that gonna be too old to do any good?

If you add your compost and work it into the soil I don't think you should have to add other nutrients. Work it in before you plant, then put a little into each hole. You can also scratch around the base of plants and add a little compost once in a while.

Will the beer, coke, or molasses draw ants?? I have trouble with them from time to time and wondered if I do this will they set up house in my garden??
Also...I am lost...I was reading a thread about soil and they were saying something about "gluten" and (I am thinking "flour???) and now I can't find it...
Anybody remember it??
Thanx Helen

Corn Gluten...A 'two bladed Axe'! Corn gluten meal materials have a high percentage of nitrogen. You must allow 1 to 4 months of decomposition in the soil prior to seeding because its *allelopathic properties inhibit the germination of seeds; However, there is no danger to established or transplanted plants.
*allelopathic means the effect of one plant species from nature on another, be it in a harmful or in a beneficial way
As far as the 'ants' Any of the sweets could.. The soda and other sweets, are not added in mass quanities and are quickly broken down. I have not had a problem, and the molasses, has sulpher, which repels the ants...Any disadvantage of the molasses is far outwieghed by the benefits. Thumb

I add Horticultural Cornmeal as well. It helps to keep diseases under control. I also till in some orange rinds, that have been ground up. It helps to repel the cut worms and grubs. This along with the molasses and compost . Believe that is the reason why the garden is now a jungle. If you are orgainic, each year your garden, lawn, trees and flowers will do better. As said on a different forum. Organics is a venture, not a race. Plus it keeps the nasty chemicals out of the environmemt. and we all live a better healthy life.

Phil, I am totally convinced that being organic is the only way to go. Since I became organic, my, jungle, I mean garden, has done so much better. I planted the tomatoes about 3 feet apart, in 5 foot high tomato cages, and they are growing together. It is hard to see the cages. The only thing that does not seem to be doing to good are the giant punkins. Lately they seem to be drying up. I give each plant a gallon of water each day. With the temps close to 100F each day, with no shade, I wonder if it is to hot for them. They were doing real good when the temps were cooler. The vines are now about 20 feet long. I folair feed, with compost tea, every three days. I use a half gallon in the garden, and another half gallon on the trees, approx 100. Let me know if I am doing something wrong with the punkins.

Just a word about ants....there was a bed in my front yard and I dusted it good with cayenne pepper. THEY LEFT !!!! YAY !! So..... I am planting more pepper for future use !! A small word about my garden....( I am not admitting to anything!) It is sooooo big I can't get in.....A dog could lay under the squash, and I am worried.. it has squash coming out (which is good) but it also has squash blooms coming out on long stems...(which I think is bad). Can I, or should I, cut some of the leaves off?? I don't know if the radish and carrots are still there or not...the soy is covered up practically, the butternut has put out some MAJOR runners, ( I am afraid it will wrap around my ankle as I stand there). I only sprinkled a little chicken poop in between the rows and one light sprinkle of miricale grow (which I will never do again). Thats all. Now......that said....I have a dumptruck load of mulch that I wanted to spead and sprinkle for next years planting...do I need to leave out the poop?? Wigging out !!
