Gidday I just find this very hard to believe but it is reported in several news media. A Michigan resident is facing up to 93 days in jail for planting a vegetable garden in her front yard, MyFoxDetroit.com reports. Julie Bass, of Oak Park, Michigan was first given a warning followed by a ticket and now she is being charged with a misdemeanor for her simple front-yard garden. "I think it's sad that the City of Oak Park that's already strapped for cash is paying a lot of money to have a prosecutor bothering us," Bass told FOX 2's Alexis Wiley. The city is claiming that the garden violates a city code which states that front yards must consist of suitable, live plant material to which Bass responds, "We think it's suitable." "They say, 'Why should you grow things in the front?' Well, why shouldn't I? They're fine. They're pretty. They're well maintained," Bass told the station. "I could sell out and save my own self and just not have them bother me anymore, but then there's no telling what they're going to harass the next person about," continued Bass. A pretrial is scheduled for July 26 and a jury trial could be next. Read more: www.foxnews.com/us/2011/07/08/michigan-resident-faces-3-days-in-jail-for-vegetable-garden/#ixzz1Rb3FQWr0

Just another bunch of Do Gooders. Trying to tell the rest of us what to do. Why is it that someone is always trying to push there option off on everybody else. Yeah, we need more regulation, thats one reason the country is in the mess we are in. CF

Gidday So by the sound of it, it is for real. My heart weeps for the Land of the Free. But we just caint ignor it cos that sorta thing is like cancer and it's spreading right through out the whole world. You are so correct my Phriend, it is just ridiculous to spend time, money bothering this woman for her garden, let alone the time and money to take it to trial and prosecute... and this type of mentality is spreading...MOCKING our "land of the Free" Such petty crap...and here Pholks is the UNSIGHTLY MESS THEY ARE UPSET ABOUT....As a nation Jack we waste so much money and time, which time IS money... and then complain fight and protest about our countries and states financial situation... Minnesota's State Government; at present , is SHUT DOWN.. That's right...been 10 days now...only needed government functions still operating... They can't agree on a budget I could correct this with the ideas that have been thought about in the past...and not TAX anyone any more than we already are... what gets me is...they could too...

She needs a good lawyer. The language is too vague, it'll never make it thru appeals but will take her time and money, which is a kind of punishment in itself. She might just tire of it all and pay the fine or whatever, I hope not.

I would rather live next to that yard, then the 'slums' in this country. I think it is great that she is trying to grow some of her own food. More folks should do the same.

The State of Michigan (where i reside) is certainly lovely, but it is trying to recover from a near death experience (financially speaking). Oak Park isn't too far from where I grew up. Tight little suburbs. Some nice, some not so nice. And while crime varies from suburb to suburb, my guess is that the B&E rate, theft rate, rape rate, drug crimes rate, and domestic violence rate aren't at 0% in Oak Park. My advice to the city of Oak Park... when all of the above rates are at 0%, then you can present your argument regarding the legality of a cabbage. wow... wow... I could see if this lady was having loud parties, or selling drugs out of her house, or just being an all around bad neighbor, but if her neighbors got on her case because of some neatly kept garden boxes, then wow.... really? Really? Shame.

Speaking for myself who gardens in my front yard ... This makes me mad as hell .. People down on their luck or people who just don't have enough light in other areas of their yard.. Should NEVER be deprived of having or growing fresh foods in their front yards!! It wasn't an eye sore .. I hope this lady takes this all the way! Wasn't it Oboma's wife that was encouraging people to do this? if you keep it looking nice there should be not ONE complaint from anyone about what you do on YOUR land! and what this woman did ... I thought looked Great! .. Maybe if I get out later this week I will take a picture of a few gardens in my area that people have planted .. I think its wonderful! My garden was technically on the City's property .. they didn't mind .. in fact there are a lot of sad people because my garden is no longer out there .. One older man stopped and told me that if I had not put that garden in he would of never thought to grow tomato's in his front yard!

Sounds like total BS to me !!!!!! As you all know , NEVER use a chopped up politician (cup) for fertilizer.....it'll kill everything you may plant..... Exceptions , cups will produce more taxes , bs that is less than useful , and take away more of our freedoms !!!!!! IMHO , if politicians had to rely on Medicare , Social Security , & the like , we common pholk have to rely on..., (instead of their special "set-ups"....) Things would be better for all of us !!!!!! Just my thoughts with no charge & no new taxes !!!! For example , the city I live closest to just "modified" a city ordinance........it's OK to have chickens in town.......AS LONG as you don't have a rooster.......HHHHHMMMM...

Well thats just not right!! I think the whole dog and garden thing is way out of proportion ... If it keeps going I wonder if she will file harassment against Oak Park?? Seems to be a pretty clear case if you ask me!! Leave them poor people alone!! Let them grow their garden and live their life!!

Gidday Praise the Lord. Sanity has at last prevailed. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a breaking news update: Michigan gardener Julie Bass has confirmed with NaturalNews that all charges have been dismissed in her case, including the two misdemeanor dog licensing charges the city threatened her with after dropping her "illegal gardening" charge. I just spoke with Julie and recorded a 20 minute interview that will be posted tomorrow here on NaturalNews. In that interview, Julie explained that she plans to continue growing her garden, and now even others in Oak Park, Michigan have decided to grow a few nice-looking food plants (peppers, zucchini, etc.) in their own yards in order to help reduce their food bills while increasing their own local food security. Julie also explained that it was the power of the alternative media that really helped her bring scrutiny to the city planner's office and ultimately get the charges dropped. So this is a national health freedom victory of the People versus Big Government. Both Julie and NaturalNews thank all the NaturalNews readers who took action to apply pressure to the Oak Park, Michigan city administrators. On her blog, Julie also related some of what she's learned about being an informed citizen and standing up for your freedoms: "...the good news is that because of all the momentum that was generated, people's eyes were opened. lots of people, myself included, were sort of passive in the face of government before. I just went along, figuring that most rules had good reasons, and I was mostly happy to comply. but this entire experience has shown me that you have to be educated. you have to ask questions. you have to have a strong internal compass for morality, and you have to be willing to stand by your Self (capital S on purpose) even in the face of people standing against you." (http://oakparkhatesveggies.wordpres...) Watch NaturalNews this weekend for the posting of the new audio interview with Julie Bass where we discuss food freedom, guerrilla gardening, taking a stand against local government tyranny, and dealing with the press. It's a really wonderful conclusion to this whole fiasco that originally had Julie threatened with 93 days in jail. She's now free, empowered and fully informed on the truth of how oppressive government can target innocent citizens for unreasonable prosecution.
