how wide is this trim Rita? I would guess oak...but it's flat sawn making it harder to tell...so it could be, considering your location...Chestnut... it'll sure look nice when yer done regardless...

I don't really know .. what do you mean trim ?? like on the cupboards or on the sides? because the sides I believe is half inch quarter round trim .. haven't gotten to that yet .. How should I determine what kind of wood it is ?? Take it to Lowes and let them tell me

How should I determine what kind of wood it is ?? Take it to Lowes and let them tell me no, I mean the width of this board and it's thickness... Or simply put..is it an exact measurement like 4 inches wide...not 3 7/8 trying to determine age.. as for How to Identify...I'd go to lowes or any woodworker... But, if you are staining it...why does it matter...get a light oak stain...I like the varnish and stain in one typa thang...

In my years of wood finishing experiences if I want the grain to shine through the finish I will do multiple layers ,start with a quality base stain then a few varnish coats OF VARNISH with a light sanding between coats, varnish dries to a harder finish than polyeurathane and is much a clearer finish.

Yeah I suppose it doesn't really matter Keith picked out a praline colored stain .. Not my favorite color to be honest a little to pinky for my taste I will post the measurements when I can .. and some stain pictures .. have to get this one area finished so I can put some stuff back in the cupboards .. W8 I am putting on the old hardware .. after we figure out how to repaint that also .. I assume prime and spray them

I would love to get different stuff .. but this matches a lot of the door knobs in the house .. and its locally made so we are going to keep it .. the knobs and hinges match also .. so it would be quite a lot to replace all of it when we are trying to work on the cheap

Poly is a very durable coating material, dries nice and comes both in water and solvent base, you guys will become quick masters and will have a bunch of great pictures to display.
