read your note on "reason for edit"thought Heck..I do that in real time conversation Bro, Laura and I are waiting to see them lil ckicks I have Old Timers I will post some pics when they hatch! I`m getting a pair of young Tuzo here shortly and I`m kinda excited about that! I went down yesterday and measured off and drove in my corner posts for my little yard.....When I`m finished it will be `10 X `36, that will be enough room for 10 to 12 `4X`4 drop pens. I know a younger feller could have finished it in one day but that was enough work for a old fat man! I will probably drive in a couple of more posts today.....

Thanks! I went down to close up the barn for the night and seen a few peeps, I guess the hatch is starting a little earlier that I thought... All my posts are set, now I just need to hang the gate and fence.....then it will be time to build some `4X`4 drop pens.

Yesterday I moved the Tuzo into their new pen, that should give them plenty of room to grow.... I added some wire mesh to the front of the pens, that should keep the peeps in and snakes out..... The peeps will be a week old tomorrow and all 14 are doing great....

Saturday I heard a lady at the hair place say that very recently she got some chickens for fresh eggs and made them an area. She said she had been keeping her rooster in the barn until she did something on their pen and the neighbors dogs got into the barn and killed him. She said several times that she was just about ready to release him from the barn and now he's dead.
My niece, who lives in the city, bought this darling, doll house looking thing that is a chicken coup. The fenced in area is very tiny but the instructions say it's big enough for 5 chickens. The instructions say they need never be let out of this tiny enclosure.
Now I have questions because I think I'd really like to have fresh eggs.
1. Do I need a rooster?
2. If yes, do I need to separate the rooster from the chickens during certain times?
3. My neighbors, MS-13 gang members - no kidding, let their chickens AND their dogs run free and they seem to get along fine. So are their eggs considered free range and healthier or better tasting?
4. Which brings me to another question. If you let your chickens run free do you supplement their feedings or do they just eat bugs?
5. And if the chickens run free where do they lay their eggs?
I need lots of help.

Looks wonderful!! I expected no less!! Happy healthy birds!! Those quail birds are some nice looking birds also ... Thank You! Those are Tuzo Gamefowl, the Quail was a reference to their size, which is usually the earliest folks can sell them safely. Saturday Now I have questions because I think I'd really like to have fresh eggs. 1. Do I need a rooster? No, hens will lay eggs with or with out a Rooster...If you want your flock to grow then you need a Rooster. 2. If yes, do I need to separate the rooster from the chickens during certain times? I usually keep a Rooster in with my hens unless she is sitting, then I will separate her so she can hatch in peace. 3. My neighbors, MS-13 gang members - no kidding, let their chickens AND their dogs run free and they seem to get along fine. So are their eggs considered free range and healthier or better tasting? Well trained dogs! I just put up a fence in order to keep stray dogs away from birds. Just because chickens are running free in the yard does not mean they are free range eggs.....there is a good chance that they are feeding crumbles and scratch grains. Free range eggs would be like organic farming, all natural feeds. Farm fresh eggs always taste better than store bought. As a experiment, crack a store bought egg in one (bowl) and a fresh farm egg in another and compare the yolk color. 4. Which brings me to another question. If you let your chickens run free do you supplement their feedings or do they just eat bugs? I don`t free range my birds, too many predators! 5. And if the chickens run free where do they lay their eggs? Where ever they can find a nice hiding spot, they have been doing it since the dawn of time! I need lots of help. I hope that helped! Feel free to ask all the questions you like, If I can`t come up with a answer or make one up I will find somebody who can.....That`s how I learned. The fence is up!

I let my birds run the fenced yard, they eat a lot of bugs, plus household goodies like veggie trim, soft veggies, old bread, etc, feed em commercial food. They found a planter they like to lay eggs in.
After 2 years egg production falls way off, have to kill em or have SPUDS HOME FOR RETIRED CHICKENS that isnt cost friendly.Ducks will lay for many many years and just need a pan of water to bathe in,and make wonderful excellent eggs too.Khaki Campbell is number one for egg production and a fine friendly enough bird.
If your dogs hassle them just sit in yard with them checking out chickens,we have a german shep and a husky mix and they adapted to them in days, now they protect them from all predators.Just said BAD DOG when they got too excited, beware tho some dogs may NOT adapt.but from what Ive seen and heard only a few breeds cant be chicken tamed.
They are easy to raise, relatively healthy and a JOY to have in yard and eat LOTS of bugs, but also your veggies, they(WE) fence them out of veggies.

Thank you Garrett and Spuds. I have one more question. Can chickens really be happy in a tiny space. The thing my niece bought is cute as can be but the fence part is really, really small.

Gosh that's not much space but I don't see how she'll have 5 chickens grow in her tiny space.
Thanks.
