Today I started lettuce seeds in the greenhouse. Hope to have fresh lettuce all winter. I can't even eat it from the store anymore.

My seeds have sprouted. It's been 73 degrees outside so I should have just planted them in the ground.

What we did here was plant two trays of greens about 300 plants in a 3' X 30' bed in early Sept. and covered the bed in a row cover with hoops. temps here have been down to 25deg a few times and we had an early snow right after hurricane Sandy. We have picked greens the other day and they were beautiful and tasty, there is still about 20' left to pick. Ruth doubled the row cover and that is the only protection it has. This was the first time for us trying this and it has been very successful. I will say that these plants were started in a green house in 150 trays and had a good start, they have done very well as I said. I plan on doing much more early this season and again at the end of the season.

It's butter crunch. The heads are small. That's 3 of them. They're a little bigger when planted in the ground outside. It's so much better than store bought.

That's why Ruth and I are giving thought about buying a nice high tunnel for our little farm-et. Makes a much longer growing season and give you more verities to grow, I really like the idea of a rolling system for starting early planting of tender crop and then growing winter crop in another area....it's really like two tunnels in one.
