JC and I was talking onions the other day in a Pm.. so I thought I'd show ours...They sure need to go out to the garden, I am on my 3rd. "haircut" As you can see, they can get a lil shaggy!First Pic: A tray of Sweet Spanish Before they got their trim. 2nd. Pic: After their Trim (easier than trimmin' yer kids hair...at least they sit still) 3rd. Pic: Two small trays of Copra 4th. Pic: Dakota Tears 5th. pic: Cortland 6th. pic: Rosa de Milano (rare red) Pholks, if you've gardened very long you find that "Rare" varieties usually are rare for a reason! (poor germination)And next to them Red Wing (planted a lil later than the others) Now, I guess You COULD Throw the "trimmins" out... BUT I DON"T THINK SO!

Nice crop of onions Phil, the trimming sure keeps ya busy. If you time the seedlings right can you avoid that?, or can you just put them out without trimming?
We just finished foliar feeding our Garlic yesterday with a combo of compost tea,Kelp, and Neptune Harvest. We also feed the lettuce that wintered over with the same formula. I wish I had started my own onions earlier this year...I could be putting them out right now. hpltr

No matter which you do though, if you do not trim them...or if you set them out before they get too tall they are prone to wind damage because they are so thin and frail Trimming them makes them stout and stocky...and by the time they go out, they are almost pencil size in diameter.. they can take the wind, and "birds" aren't as attracted to them as nesting material ,,,not really phunny...but they do seem to like the tiny lil ribbons of leaves blowing in the air. It don't take long, a pair of scissors and a cup of coffee... If they are over 6 when I'm setting them out...we give em a last trimming... But, no matter, trimming helps your young starts make it through the first couple of cold windy weeks in da garden... Proof's in da puddin'

That information helps a lot Phil, I am definitely going to grow my own from seed next season, much less expensive and better verity selection.
I always felt I had an advantage when buying sets or plants, but that was when I was just gardening and only planted a few plants, now were talking 100s of plants.
Yes Garlic in snow is good but here we are or were warming up and the Garlic is growing top, so I got antsy and wanted to give them a kick start. Temps went down from the 60°s to the 20°s at night and 40°s during the day, right now it's 34°....go figure. By this week end it should be back in the 60°s.
