Iris has always been one of my favorite flowers too. I like the low-maintenance side of them. Along with daffodils and daylillies, they need only a little weeding and very little else besides rainfall. Being a guy and more into veg growing, I can have a few perennials like these and enjoy the colors without taking up a lotta time with 'em.
Yes she sure grows em' big.. we have what used to be Oak Savanna here..now that all the trees have been removed..what is left is clay-ey soil..except our garden areas which although have some clay..they don't have much..plus I been adding organic matter to it for the last 15 years..
I till the soil at least 8" deep, then build a raised bed over that..for a depth of 16" a lot of Laura's carrots..go the 16", then form a lil HOOK...making simply PULLING CARROTS.. a tator fork/shovel event ... what I can't get over is that although BIG..they are so sweet and crisp..
