So I can't change the 2013 on my last thread so I guess I have to start a new one. Phil or Rita or anybody if you can change that and merge this more power to you.
Anyway, even though most of you are snowed in, the sun is shining here today, and I'm thinking garden 2014.
Last year I had GREAT success with the squash in the straw bales (where is Jack) so I'm going to do that again. We had an unusual amount of rain last spring, and I know that made it work so well, but if that's not the case this year I'll just have to water.
I've never found a way to keep squash, as in canning or freezing, that it didn't get all watery but if any of you know a secret please let me know.
Johnny is going to build me 2 raised beds and I'm going to put tomatoes and cukes in those. No particular reason for this and it may change. As I type this I'm thinking WHY.
In the big garden will be potatoes, corn, green beans. Green peas will be in the big garden but growing on the trellis.
I'm not planting anything this year that we don't eat. Last year I planted egg plant and bell peppers. Johnny likes egg plant but I don't particularly so I ended up giving most of them away. He will only eat fried egg plant. He won't eat egg plant lasagna or anything fun like that. Johnny won't eat bell peppers at all so I ended up giving all those away.
I'm going to plant beets in with my flowers and I've already got carrots growing.
I've decided against lettuce in the garden this year because it all comes up at once and a person can only eat so many salads. After my cabbage worm fiasco I will never plant cabbage again.
This is my plan - sort of. If anyone has a great egg plant recipe please send it my way. I'll ask Johnny if he will try it and then maybe plant egg plant after all.
I'm open for ideas and suggestions. hpltr

I don't know Rita. Should they be merged under one heading - Bestofour's Garden - but leave it 2013 and 2014? Like 2 folders in one section? Whatever is usually done.
Never mind this. I see that you've already taken care of things. Should have looked first. Thank you very much. hpltr

And it has begun..... I tillered up a spot, took some bricks, made a rectangle, put down newspaper, added straw that was used to squash last year so it was wet and broken down, added dirt on top of that and planted strawberries at one end and beets at the other. tillered up the big garden, put up the little trellis and planted peas and a row of carrots. I also planted a few carrot seeds in the straw bales from last year that I didn't use in the strawberry patch today.

I've decided to plant okra this year. It's been a while and it didn't do all that great because I didn't keep it cut. Maybe I'll do better.

I have a question. I bought, or rather Johnny bought, some seed potatoes from a local hardware store. They told him they were certified. I put them on the back porch and noticed yesterday that they've started to mold. I've never had this happen. What could have happened.

I think I'm going to move them. I thought I had them in a sunny spot but now I'm not so sure. I think if I move them up to where I put the straw bales last year it will work better. I hate the thought of moving those things now that I've got them filled with straw compost.

Well I pitched a little fit. Ok maybe it was a big fit. Russell works for my husband. He's a functioning crack addict. He comes to work every day but uses every cent he makes for crack and cigarettes. He's 40 years old sleeps on the floor at his sisters doesn't have a car. Very sad. We are doing some stonework on our house and one day when work was slow Johnny brought Russell here to work on the stone. Because the crack has fried his brain Russell doesn't always think things through and Johnny is always complaining that he never completely finishes a job. Doesn't put tools back, doesn't clean up. If Johnny wasn't such a nice guy Russell wouldn't have a job. Now Johnny has about 12 million dollars worth of equipment. His shop is filled with equipment, our barn is filled with his equipment, his van if filled with equipment. Pitiful me has 1 wheelbarrow and 1 red handled hoe. Guess whose wheelbarrow and hoe he used to mix the cement??? If you're going to use, without asking, MY stuff, at least rinse it off when you're finished!!!! My wheelbarrow was full of dried cement. Johnny made Russell come back and clean it out but all he could do was try to beat the cement out with a hammer. It won't come totally clean. And it won't come off my hoe either. It's even on the handle!! So yesterday Johnny pulled this out of the back of his van. Guess I'll pick up my own new hoe.

I think I'll get a lot of use out of it. This morning I planted potatoes and worked on the straw bales. I miss Jack. He was my straw bale friend.
