We sure wish it was spring here. <<<<<< would be good other than this white crap we have on the ground. Today was a day from HELL.. My drive in to work was not at all fun..no plows were on the roads & we had some pretty serious drifting going on..lots of crashes & ditched vehicles.. Then Phil went out to blow snow drifts..& the snow blower has done given up on us..the gear box has troubles..now..I have spent 2 weeks in & out of the hardware store getting parts for it that went out..belt & clutch drive cable. So...we are NOT having a good day here. Kind of depressing really! We are in the market for a MOVE SOUTH!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear about all your troubles Laura !! My DIL who lives near you guys didn't make it to work (in Rochester) at all Friday. After seeing 4 cars in the ditch, came on a spun out semi and 2 wreckers blocking the road, gave up and went home. I on the other hand went north ( had to bring a friend to the VA in Minneapolis) and all I encountered was scattered snow pack for the first ten miles and after that-clear sailing. Made the round trip in 2 hours 15 minutes and it's at least 2 hours in perfect summer weather. So it all depended on where you were and where you were going. My daughter who commutes to Faribault (15 miles west) had no trouble Friday either, Thursday however was a different story but she did make it there and back. See, the weather Gods don't want you going south !!!

I love the sounds of spring..the lil peepers, I love the crickets and locusta and katie dids... What sucks though is the lil frogs..I gotta be close to hear em, same with all...my one ear profound hearing loss..and with the tinitus; which is bad.. but, on a real quiet night..and ifin I'm outside..I can discern some of the sounds
Sure purty flowers Bro..hopin to see some soon...

So Phil, do the birds leave when the snow comes? I've never thought about it before because I'm so used to hearing those sounds all year long. Even in the winter we hear crickets at night.

I am sooooooooo ready for spring, we had more snow over the weekend and its -28 today.
To answer Sheri's question....the majority of the birds do fly south, usually around the time of the first frost and dont come back until mid April...be way too cold for the wee guys.

Sheri, Not all of them leave..we have a lot of birds that stay..at least at the first of winter..this winter though some of the ones that typically stay...left after the weather stayed Sub-zero we have in our area here and at the feeder most days.. chickadees, nuthatches, pine siskens, grackles, starlings, Lots of different types of Woodpeckers..cardinals (seems to have headed south),buntings, red wing blackbirds (same as the cardinals this year)Lots of sparrows..and all the "birds of prey" stick around... Laura can hear them from inside the house...I can hear them when outside only...unless they are right outside the window YELLING I so wish we could have the birds that leave Plus the birds that don't all year long..love hearing them sing their songs.... in the winter..although most don't take the time to stand outside and listen..even a starling has a nice song

I don't blame the birds for leaving. They have more sense than humans but I can't imagine not hearing the birds. That's one of the reasons I can't get my mind right with moving to the city. We do have a little road noise, since we live on a 4 lane, but it's not so much that it drowns out the birds. I love listening to my birds while I'm getting dressed in the morning.

Sheri..I gotta tell you I have hearing that is so good at night..it scares me. The deep silence I can hear..is so QUIET..yes I have some hearing loss in my right ear. (loud concerts when younger) BUT..at times it would be nice to hear something..when the wind is not blowing & there are no bugs to listen to or birds..it almost hurts my ears. We do have lots of hardy birds & I think they stay because we feed them & feed them well.We enjoy them. Very much!! I often tell Phil of the different sounds I hear on my way to work. Frogs..Red winged black birds..Both of which we enjoy.

I sleep with a fan on for the noise because I don't like hearing total silence either. Maybe a hearing aid will help Phil.
On that note it certainly isn't spring here today. We have had sleet and I'm having to go to work a little late because I need to wait until the sun comes up to get safely out of my driveway.

Funny I have seen robins almost all winter. They generally don't come till late winter. This winter was so cold and I seen them. I figured they had NOWHERE eles to go so just tuffed out the winter here. LOL We will be a while before we see any flowers popping out. you can see barely a hint of color on some trees that are thinking of budding out. Other than that nothing! Ohhh how I cannot w8 for it too feel like spring! Supposed to get up to 48 today tho I guess I will be thankful!

Ice can be so damaging! Specially if your not used to it! They try and keep trees around lines and stuff cut back here in case of ice. So you know, it doesn't take the lines out! Lucky for us are six inches of ice we had in our drive has finally melted! A few 40º days and it finally melted. Except in the shady areas . Today it's raining pfft! But supposed to be up to 50º so whoot whoot!

Good morning on the last few hours of winter ! Middle of today is the start of spring (according to the calender) Yesterday I had 5 squirrels chasing each other through the oak trees west of my house for 10-15 minutes, up-down around and around- they were having a good time ! Cats are roaming and yowling every night. And last night when I went to shut off my porch light there was a possum looking at me ! What the h*** are those critters doing in Minnesota, especially after the winter we have had ? He (it?) looked in good shape too. Years ago my daughter came home late at night and saw what she thought was one of our cats on the porch till it turned and looked at her and she saw all those teeth. You should have heard her scream !! They are just plain UGLY.
