Mrs made a potato cage.We tried before, you stacked more dirt on top as green grew.Failure.Found out the failure supposedly r/t not enough green to support plant. This time we are putting in layers, with plants on outer edge, growing out the sides instead of up.Last layer let plants grow up.Will see how that works, lots of green showing in just a couple weeks.

I have another question about chickens because my sister in WV has been given a coop and is being given chickens. Here goes. My niece, who lives in the fanciest part of Charlotte (by South Park if you know where that is) bought one of the those cute little doll house chicken coops so she can have chickens. They can not, under any circumstances, let the chickens out even though their back yard is fenced in. The 5 chickens are living in a tiny fenced area and they go up a ladder to roost at night. The fenced area looks like it's 3x5. Really small. It seems to me and my WV sister that being that close would cause aggression and maybe disease and tons of poop.
My WV sister has 8 acres so she can make her coop bigger. She does need to keep them closed in though because of coyotes, wolves, ground hogs, bears, and all sorts of critters she has out there on the range. Does 1 yard per chicken sound like a good idea? So if she has 5 chickens her coop will be 5 yards square?

4 of our chickens roost at night in a 9 sq FOOT cage,3 ducks have about 12 sq feet. Then roam yard at day, they really need outside area out of coop IMO.

The raccoons tore up the cage and it suffered much,HOWEVER,also found some nice little taters so I would say with better planning this does work.
