We have 2 very spoiled dogs as some of you know. For those who don't. We have Dan a Redbone Mix and Rika, a dalmation, hound, and jack russel mix. We love them dearly and treat them like babies. They sleep wherever they want on the love seat, our beds or couch. Our home is their home. We feed them well. But we let them out when they want out. They go to my mom's and my neice's and they let them in and treat them just like we do. But the past couple months, they have developed a habit of leaving for 12-36 hours. We let them out in the morning after Bub gets on the school bus, most mornings, they do their business and then come back in. But some days they take off. We have no idea where they go. We have hunted the neighborhood over for them. We want to have them spayed and neutured(spell?) but wonder will this help? My inlaws had a rambling dog and had him fixed and he stays home now. Any idea if this will help us?

from the looks of the pics Ya have some fine doggies there Lucy... most likely they got spring fever...and at the age they are...just imagine a couple teenage kids running around ...exploring..and all those other doggies.. Getting them fixed may work...but in the area you live.. I'd wonder around the country side too...it's so nice there...even if I was nuetered

I would def get them Neutered. It is a male and female correct? If they don't get fixed you will have puppies. Yes having the neutered and spayed will help keep them home. They may still be curious but they won't go off looking for some strange as we call it. It's all about hormones ...

They are so cute Lucy!! I've heard that too, that having them fixed does help. What about tying them up while your gone and having a dog house for them, so there's no fear of them wandering off?

They look properly well spoiled.I seriously fence mine, even if they are well behaved some moron might run em over,or other might shoot em.I lost a few as a kid, never again.
But Country dogs, what do I know, not much so my advice is city dogs that Ive experienced.

Darrell refuses to tie a dog up and since neither of them have ever been tied, not sure how they would handle it. We got Rika a Heat Shot and hopefully that will keep us from having puppies until we can get them both fixed. There is a program I am going to check into that pays part of it.

Cavey, Dan will bite their ass, even if we are here but Rika would only hurt them by knocking them down. lol

Check with the local animal control center Lucy- the one here give out 2 vouchers a year per household to have animals "fixed". It is all based on your income, but the level is pretty high on what you can make, and then it costs you nothing but their shots. We are blessed to have a local rescue group that offers CHEAP spays and neuters for everyone. I had someone drop off a mama cat a couple years ago and before I knew what hit me she had 6 kittens. Gave them all away except 2 and before I could get her fixed(money issues) she had 7 more. I called the rescue group and between the animal shelter paying for 2 and the rescue covering 5 completely, it cost me about $150 to spay and neuter 8 cats Having them fixed willl definitely help with the wandering and the length of time they stay gone when they do wander.

I do know around here some vets will do cheap Spay and neuter because most vets want people to get their pets spayed and neutered , there are alot of vets around here I know 2 of them that will cut a deal specially if you bring two of them in. botesbabe is right about the animal control also, or they may be able to give you a vet that will do it cheaper. Never heard of a heat shot Good idea

You've got some great advice Lucy.....good luck. Its too bad that you don't have a small video camera (maybe you do), and strap it on one of the dogs just to see where they do go...LOL!!

Ohh my gosh lucy. I would be worried sick if my dog roamed like that. Are you afraid they may get shot or something? My daughters dog went missing once, they searched and searched here he was down in a ravine , his collar was hooked on a fence and he was stuck. Lucky for them they found him. They kept looking for him in the woods. I said look in the other direction because there's cows he's probably going to the smelly stuff! Sure enuf there he was ....
