We grow onions every year but never get very large ones.We get sets from the garden centers I forget the varieties. They dont get much larger than say a jumbo egg. Whats my soil missing? Or is it water, or.... or... {{shrug}}

Or is it water, or.... or... {{shrug}} I agree with CF..... we never use sets.. Around here, and in most places I imagine..You go to a garden center, ask..What type are these sets? they look at you with that ?? face and say ..I don't know.. They don't know, or don't answer.. A little research and the TYPE is intermediate.. Meaning they "should" grow anywhere..they will..but not very well..the types are ... long day (what we need up north) Short Day...for down south and them intermediate onions I never had luck with intermediate onions anywhere I have lived.. We grow onions as big as CD discs..sometimes they get too big But Only from seed..sets fail..and yeah..they are about egg size seeds, or growing your own starts (we start them late January indoors) is the best way to get BIG onions..and get a MUCH bigger selection of varieties to choose from We set them out as early as the weather/soil allows... as for soil..fertilize first before planting..(we use Chicken ) ..Water..(never let your onions go dry) they are too shallow rooted

I really enjoy gardening forums and this thread about onions has been so helpful because I have had trouble growing large onions. I have a recipe for an onion relish but calls for sweet onions and a lot of them so wanted to grow them to save money but haven't had any luck. Maybe this year I will. Going to try starting seeds inside here soon and hope to have plants ready by spring.

Our neighbor uses sets and grows them the size of soft balls.......when his onions get about the size of a golf ball he pulls dirt away from them until only a small part of the onion and the roots are covered....this way most of the onion is above ground.
Welcome countryred...from one Kentuckian to another. wave

Thank you Phil. I am going to share the link to your forum on my fb page. You have done a wonderful job with this. I am going to buy my onion seeds today and get them started. I have heard with onion bulbs to pull the dirt away from around the bulb when it starts sprouting to increase the size. Is this true and do you do this with seed onions also?

I have heard with onion bulbs to pull the dirt away from around the bulb when it starts sprouting to increase the size. Is this true and do you do this with seed onions also? Nope, I suppose everyone has their own technique. but We plant the seed about 1/4" deep in flats that are at least 4" deep If they get over 6" before we set them into garden, we trim them back ( a haircut of sorts with scissors) to about 3 inches..and do this as often as needed... makes them short/stocky and able to withstand winds. by the time the weather is good they should be about pencil diameter... then out to the garden. Depth to set them: Just enough to catch the roots (about 2 inches or less) 6 inch spacing between..12 inches between rows... That's it.. Water: NEVER let your onions go completely dry...they are very shallow rooted Onions don't tolerate weed pressure... then, depending on your grow zone...Here..about July they start MAGICALLY RISING above ground to form lovely bulbs (believe me I start PHREAKIN' OUT if they aren't above ground by then)..but, they always make it I have heard of folks loosening/removing soil from around them... and mostly when I lived down south... I don't, and would be a bit concerned...like I stated..very shallow rooted... What ag zone Do you live in Red? we are in zone 4... Oh and THANKS FOR THE MENTION on Your FB page and Forum !
