I don't know how many if y'all get or read Mother Earth News....but I have been a subscriber since issue 17...(bought all the back issues)....and am still getting it. www.motherearthnews.com/This issue has plenty of garden stuff in it but was only 80 something pages? This reminds me of the trouble years,... changed hands a couple of times...stopped publication, and restarted again. Used to be a good Homesteader Manual, seems suburbanite lately..... Any one else get this magazine?

DW and I...took the kids to the Mother Earth News Eco Village on vacation in 1982. Also attended the Knoxville World Fair as a side trip.
Many of the projects were set up and operating at the Eco Village....and was run by the staff members from the magazine.
Yeah very cool back then.......

I and several others shared the first edition until it was worn out..the local news stand got the first editions..then..they didn't get anymore issues..until we all complained.. Back then, it was Great..then it was slowly taken up by advertisements..until useful knowledge was wedged in between ads.. in the last few years, it was full of re-hashed articles..like they ran out of stuff to publish... Same with Rodales Organic Gardening..had issues from back when it was a magazine the size of readers digest mag... Those are some sturdy cages there Hunter..now ifin I only had enough wood to make a hundred of em'...will have to start visiting construction site dumpsters agree

If I were to grow hundreds of tomatoes.....and I did help out on a community garden....we used a hog wire fence, and ties up the plants....in rows. I built these for use in the city and the ability to fold them up and store under the eves of the garage. Over the years I did have as may a 12, with a couple used for cukes and climbing beans.

I built these for use in the city and the ability to fold them up and store under the eves of the garage. Over the years I did have as many as 12, with a couple used for cukes and climbing beans. Oh, I would love to have a few of them, especially for beans..we have a problem with pole beans here..it's so darn windy... Hog wire, you meaning fencing then? at present We use 3-16 ft.hog panels, which we fit 34 plants on by alternating sides..they work great.. we have 58 cages that are great..a few more that are old..but still work (we usually place them outside and away from the garden in various spots to isolate varieties for seed)
the hog panels are about the easiest, have some issues with larger varieties like Amish paste...which left to their own device will get Very big.. we put these on the back of the corn crib just to see how big they would get ...check the pic... In late September, when pic was taken they were 11ft. 6in." and they grew another couple of feet agree

Yeah hog panels......They were attached to a series of poles about 8 ft. apart....old light poles that co-op left for us. This was a community garden.
Now that is some big tomatoes....

I never used cages. Never pruned them. I O may doo it here if I plant any, I do not ear them. MIL said just grow things you can eat.
