I planted onions inside from seeds. they are not doing too good. they get tall and thin and kill over. I have tried trimming them back but that hasn't helped either. What am I doing wrong?
could be light as Mike said, what type of soil or growing medium did You use?
.You said they were falling over, do you see any sign of "damping off" or have they just fallen over ?
(a darkened pinched look at the soil level would indicate "Damping off Disease")
Damping Off |
|
For the damp off disease..we use plain powdered cinnamon..applied to the soil surface, there are other simple applications that work also..
Light, well I keep the lights at 4" or under...but as Mike said, 6" is fine, for onions at least...for other types of starts we keep them at 4"
once the plants reach 6" I cut them back to 3"
another possibility is watering..
too much and they will get spindly and weak..
Too little...well, onions are shallow rooted, especially when Young..and they need to be consistently moist, yet not soggy
Too much water, and a infested soil, or a house full of houseplants and You get Fungus gnats..which will eat away at your root system..making them fall...
If, while tending to your plants, You see ...
(what most people pass off as fruit flies)..then You have fungus gnats..If You find them..
You can go to town and get some insecticide
..or..
You can go to your medicine cabinet and grab some
PEROXIDE...
Let your soil dry out on top..
mix 1 part peroxide to 4 parts water..the peroxide kills the larvae on contact, and
Gives your plantings a extra BOOST of oxygen and water molecules...
the mix will fizz a bit when you apply it..no worry
Red there are many things it could be if You could tell Us a little about how You planted them agree
