On July 11th 2007, we came home to find a young red tail hawk on our deck! Apparently, he had just left the nest and was still learning to fly. He spent over five hours walking the rails of our deck and the rest of the night just twenty feet off the deck in a small tree in our back yard. During this tme we took nearly 100 photos and three videos of him. He was not the least bit scared of us and we even got to pet him. This was truely a once in a life time experience.

It truly was a VERY unusual experience. Not to mention the Adrenalin rush! Just one more notch in our wildlife photography portfolio.

I suppose we should have updated this way before now, We had the DNR come out and check the Hawk, he said it was justing learning to fly. I tried to feed it, it wouldn't eat or drink, but it stayed here for a few days flying from one tree to another and then we found it's feathers and carcass about 1 week later. It was really sad to see this beautiful bird dead. We don't know if it starved or something killed it.

Yes, they are a beautiful bird, but they can make a mess in a chicken yard. Keeps me buying netting.

Bscamo, Would you try to eat a rubber snake? Nope , but then again , I'm not a hawk. Over the years I've had a few birds sneak into my boat & choke to death on rubber worms. Hence the saying "bird brain".

"t" , sorry to hear about that. One of the pix sort of looked like it may have had a problem with its left eye. At least you guys got some joy before it exited to the big chicken coop in the sky ! Unfortunately , death is a fact of life.

Thanks to all. It was a sad time, I did get a few feathers to put up with all the bird photos we have in the den. It was so nice to pet the hawk. I only wish he had made it.
