He might be excavating that knot to make a nest! You have a Pileated Woodpecker there. If you can leave some dead trees standing, or even on the ground hidden on your property line, as they rot he'll go there for food. Very COOL!

I never realized how BIG they were! We have a couple more types around here, too. A smaller one that is brownish/gray. Downy, maybe?? They are soooo cool to watch!

Downy and hairy are black and white, males have a splash of red on the back of their heads. Much smaller than the pileated. Brownish..... flicker?

I went to WhatBird and it is a Northern Flicker, Wrennie!! I also think we have the Downy as well....
