A neighbor gave me a concrete bird bath that she was no longer using. Been wanting one for ages but not willing to put out the money so the price of this one was just right! LOL
I put fresh water in it most days but there still seems to be some sort of slimy film covering the bottom of the bowl. I have removed the water and let it sit in the sun and whatever this is goes away. But after adding water it comes back. Does anyone have any idea what this is or if it is harmful to the birds. Should I be using something in the water?
Thanks for any advice.

Scrub the bird bath with hydrogen peroxide, rinse. Then when you add the water Peachfly, add a few (5-6) sprigs of fresh lavender in a bundle and just let it float...it will retard the algae growth, I have heard that a few pennies tossed in the water will too! whichever you use though, clean and change water at least once a week

Great score on the birdbath!! I have no suggestions on keeping it clean, but Phil knows these things!

Thanks Phil...I'm off to buy peroxide. Fortunately I have 2 lavender plants in the yard but I think I'll try the pennies too, just to experiment.
