last year which would have been the first year i expected stawberrys was a bad one first the rabbits ate most of them, but also we had a weird spring it got really warm for quite a spell and then turned cold again even the professional gardeners didn't get any strawberries.. i got 2... what i need is something that doesn't take a lot of talent to put up to keep the bunnies and most likely deer out of my berries.

I had a lot of berries at the start of the season, then the rains came and that was about it.
I went to my local Agway store (or was it Amway) and bought what is called "rabbit fence". I put it around both gardens. Keeps em out good

I've heard that if you spread dog and human hair around it will keep them away, I've never tried it. A gun works wonders too , Calm down YB, I mean to scare them!

I do Love Strawberries! And I'm Fond of DEER, both in the wild...and In the OVEN! Jeanette, as you know, or have discovered, Most of the natyural deterants don't have alot of effect. Mostly due to the maintenance of application, Get a good rain...start all over. The available chemical deterants..are no exception, and are costly. I have tried predator deterants in the past, not needed here, only an occasional transient deer. The best I found was Wolf and Coyote urine, these I applied to, Ahem,,er..Tampons and took a plastic bottle(soda), cut the bottom out and poked a hole in the top, where I pulled the string through and hung these around the perimeter of the garden, this will keep the rain off, and make them effective longer, another widely used solution is quite simply, rotten eggs and sulpher. All of these are dependent on several factors, the most significant one tho, IS, How hungry, and How Many, deer you HaveNow, growing up in iowa, I know there are MANY DEER, It is impossible to think that any of these will work everywhere, It all depend on the area you are in,If Ya Live in Deer Country U.S.A., you're gonna have damage, The national deer population,is now estimated at over 25 million to 30 million farmers in the grain regions have est. $20,000 to $30,000 in crop damage annually. deer damage from auto collisions and crop and timber losses reaches at least $1 billion a year You could put up a fence, be prepared to go at Least 10-11 feet high, because again, in some cases, this isn't going to keep a Hungry Deer Out. Try PIGS: pigs (smell, size, or sound) have been shown to keep them away and they avoided the garden and pig pen until the pigs were removed. Thumb

we plant three long field rows of sweet corn and the deer or the racoon get almost all of it some years, i'm not sure it's even the deer that get into my garden it might be rabbits, they only eat my garden in the spring strawberries, brocilli, cauliflower stuff like that, but not my sugar peas, or tomatoes or greenbeans. my garden is on old hog pasture land, i wonder if the deer can still smell it.

Don't know if Dog hair works, my dog chases rabbits all over the yard, When he is to tired to chase, he watches them hope by him... Stupid dog!!!
My rabbit fence keeps out dogs, cats wabbits and T's. I would suggest looking into it.
oops, Did I say T's? he he he :boese3:

to YB, even picking on me here!! GEEEZZZ! Any way Jeanette, I had cats using the ground around my foundation and flowers beds for litter boxes. I spread Moth balls and it worked fine to keep them out. You might try this. I don't know how it would affect your veg. tho. Ask Phil or Seadog, their both Master Gardeners.

well the cat's don't bother my vegie garden to bad, it's big enough to accomodate them but they totally destroy the flowers around my house, i have gotten to the point that i am seriously seriously thinking of puting rock down around my whole house, every year it's the same, the flowers start lokking really nice, then the mamma cats bring all the spring kitties sometimes 20+ and they play african safari around my house.

moth balls don't work. I tried commercial stuff to keep critters at large like blood mix, crap labeled for keeping dogs and cats and wabbits away. Nothing seems to work but a good fence designed for those things. I have yet to hear of anything that works better. I am open to "proven" suggestions. Hi Laura

I have no Data on Moth Balls, maybe seadog does! I can say tho, that for Rabbits, Good ol' Black Pepper, works GREAT, you have to replace it after a rain, but ya see, rabbits Gotta 'sniff' there intended food...and Black pepper, just ain't workin' for them. Dogs and Cats...Is a whole different story, for cats, a real nice stand of catnip, will keep them busy, and if you put this near some loose soil and water, they won't "go" anywhere else, to speak of! Dogs, yeah, YB is right, there isn't much that will keep em out, Although: ....about to get a bashin' here! :poundon: I have before, ran electric fence, about a foot and a half, off the ground, around the "no Go Zone", about one encounter is all it takes, then You pretty much can take the fence back down....The dogs I have had to resort to this on...make a W-I-D-E path around the given area.

we're not bothered by deer or rabbits where we live now ,but we have a remote place where we used to garden, and still keep a little orchard. I have it fenced with eight strands of barb wire covered with six foot chicken wire. It keeps the deer and small rodents like rock marmots out, but we have bear problems and have gotten tired of eating/shooting them.
we have a definate cat problem in town as far as I'm concerned I protect my strawberries with bird netting or remay garden cloth over hoops made of 1/2 inch cpvcpipe that I get at the local hardware for 2.50 per 10 ft. I cut those into five foot lengths. its a little expensive ,but they last forever and you can use them to make covers for spring crops and or prove alittle exra warmth in a cool summer or extend the fall season. It wouldn't be good for large plantings, but is good for things that you grow in beds.

I don't really know about mothballs, I suppose enough of them might work but It would take alot of them for alarge garden and they stink more than I can bear. I think the rotten eggs and sulpher, pepper spray and that type of thing all work to some extent but its labor intensive to keep it applied.

it's all alot of work, i put a big fence around my garden the first year i had it and it was a huge mess to keep the weeds down, i took it down so i could mow right to the edge.
