Here is a picture of Buck, a very striking roo, and one of his hens. I am not sure of this one's name. These are kind of hard to tell apart at times! This is the first time I had bought full grown chickens from some one. She was a friend on a chicken board I go to and although she liked them, she needed the space and needed to get rid of them, so, she only lives about 30 minutes from me and I said I would love to have them. Now, I have learned some things since then. If you don't raise chickens from chicks, they probably haven't been handled a lot and will be afraid of you, and more than likely you are never going to convince them to eat out of your hand or let you pet them. This was disheartening to me. I am used to everyone just chomping at the bit to greet me. Although I like these chickens, I will never buy chickens as adults again. I did this with the silkies also, and with the same result, wild untamed chickens. Its just not the same, so I have been there and done that. Buck will let me handle him, he won't bite me and will tolerate me holding him if I can catch him, In the spring I may breed Buck and his main squeeze and hatch out some chicks from them, maybe, we will see. If you look closely, the comb is very unique looking. Thats where they get there names "Buttercups". To see a close up of their combs they have some great pictures on Feathersite.com. Just type in buttercups. Welp, I am going to try and be productive today, so I will bid you all goodbye for the day, and will see y'all again later on, probably be tomorrow...have a great day all!

Thanks Phil, but I got to be productive around the house today...lol...my husband will be home early today and is taking me and our daughter out to eat, so I got to concentrate on getting chores done and school done early today! Shelby has money burning a hole in her pocket from her Grandaddy too, so we go to stop in at a Video Game place. She has a bad case of the I WANTS for a Pearl Pink Nintendo DS handheld system. She is a big gamer, gets that from her Daddy, they love the games! I hope I am doing alright here. Its been pretty easy so far, y'all make it easy, I am going to finish up a roll of film today by taking pics of all the babies, so I will get them developed tonight when we go to the store for groceries and be able to share them with y'all tomorrow.

Nic pics and birds! I know what u mean about getting grown chickens, a friend gave me some not long ago. 1 Americana and 2 Bantams, they are mixed with something and they are just getting to where they will come close to me. But they were so pretty I couldn't refuse them. I'm a sucker for pretty chickens. He had to many and needed to get rid of them. He was going to just turn them loose. They wouldn't have survived long if he had. The other chickens have finally stopped picking on them. I have one that is almost half grown now that they are finally starting to accept her into the group except when it comes feeding time. She is precious, and stays right at my feet to eat. She knows I will shoo the others off her long enough to eat. DH was against me getting into chicken to start with, but now he enjoys watching them, they are so amusing at times. Trudy

You know your hubby better than anyone. My dh knew I had been wanting some for a long time, but wouldn't for years cause we moved around to much back then plus we had a lot on our plate then to. We've been here now for bout 12 yrs and have no plans on moving. I finally just went to the feed store and ordered some. He was still against it, but thought they were cute but would complain about them being noisey. It was to cold for them to be outside at the time so I had them in the spare bedroom for several weeks waiting for it to warm up a bit. So they kinda grew on him as time went on. It helped to when the fresh eggs started coming in. And he has a friend at work that loves his chickens and hatches his own eggs. He constant talks about his babies, so DH can't escape them at work or at home. He'll now help feed them and gather the eggs if I'm busy and can't get home before dark. If there was hope for him who was avidly against it, there may be hope for you. We've been married for 18 yrs, and he knows when I make my mind up on something theres no changing it. But he usually gets what he wants to, so its a two way street here which is the way a commitment should be. Ok I'm rambling now. Good luck. trudy

Yeah, I doubt that I will get them right away either. Maybe in a year or two. He knows I want them but is concerned that I won't take care of them. Which is kinda weird, 'cuz I am the one who cares for the dog and cat we already have and always took care of the fish and the hamsters and stuff like that when the kids were small. I think it is more the cleaning of the chicken coop part he is concerned about though.

Thanks Trudy! I started out with just 5 buff orpington chicks from the feed store, and then 5 more, speckled sussex, and then this past srping well...umm, 10 more, 5 barred rocks and 5 black austrolorps, and then 5 more, americaunas, and well, I got a pair of Japanese Silver Phoenix, bred them this November, eggs in the bator, got 3 silkies, 3 frizzles, a phoenix roo inwith the americaunas, an aracauna pair, a golden duckwing roo that is paired with a half RIR half game hen, they are a sweet couple, both outcasts, they really do love each other. I got 4 silkie babies we hatched out and 13 phoenix babies we hatched out. Anyway, I think I am up to 62 now...lol. I love my chickens. Oh yeah, and the buttercups and the buttercup roo...is that it? Ummm...you never know around here..oh yeah, and three bachelor aracauna roos, eye candy if you will, got no use for them at all! But they are pretty! Hey trudy..what county are you in? I am in Polk. :merx: Once the fencing and the barn is up, I will be getting golden laced and silver laced wyandotte chicks, I am going to order hens from McMurray I think, Kelly...the chicken whisperer... yep, I am nuts...

Wow what a selection. I don't have that many. I have 18 hens of various kind, and 1 rooster. Other than the Dominickers (sp) my first batch is mixed breeds. Some I really don't know what they are. 4 hens are black with some green hues, I call them Black Crest. 1 americana, 2 doms, and 1 thats got dominickers mixed with something. A mut I guess! lol. I had more at first but didn't have a top on my coop and some got out the first couple of days and my dog got them.
My second batch I bought as 1 day old, all pullets were 2 RIR, 2 SLW, 2GWW. Then came the 2 bantams, and the 1 americana from a friend. Now with the baby from one of the mommas make 18 hens. Then the roo.
Your gonna love the Wyandottes, mine are just starting to lay good. I have two of each of the GL and SL. I'm glad I got them cause my others seem to have stopped laying now that its cold. Is that normal? Do you have any Rhode Island Reds, I have 2 and they have such a sweet demeaner. Love attention. I don't know that my pen will hold anymore, so I guess I better slow down on adding anymore. Hmmmm wonder how long that will last! lol. trudy

Yep, its normal. The daylight is a lot less in the winter, and its a time for their bodies to rest. Mine just got done molting and it was a very hard molt for them, so they stopped laying regular a while back. Then when it got cold, there have been no eggs at all for a month. Some folks will put a light in the coop to keep them laying, but I don't I just let their bodies rest. You have a patchwork quilt of chickens it sounds like. Got any pictures of them? her is a picture of some of mine. Oh yeah, you forgot to tell me what county you are in! ? If you want to, just was curious.

Give me a day or two to download my camera. I am like you that I don't see why they shouldn't rest. If laying an egg is anything similar to having a baby I'd want to rest to. lol. I am in Quitman Co. which is near the Ala. line, 12 miles from Lake Eufaula. If you ever go the Panama City Beach you've probably have gone thru Eufaula on 431S. Thats where I work, landscaping the City. What about you? Oh, nice chickens. trudy
