I milked her tonight-they are not nursing enough off from her, she was so engorged I felt sorry for her. Anyway, I took 2 cups off. That was around 8 o'clock. I just went down there to check on everyone and the kids are up playing. They nurse for a second or two and then move on. She still looks pretty full. She is a very good Mom. Talks to them all the time!

Dap, they are so cute! They will b very entertaining. What breed again? My parents raised goats for milk, my brother had to have it when he was young. They sold the rest. We would milk them, then put them out on grass to let em' graze fer a spell, there's a formula there, that I can't remember, but the grazing is timed, so the milk doesn't taste off...I used to give glasses of milk to my friends, and they never knew it was goats mlk...till I told em'!

Dap, do you drink the milk?? I always wondered if I could drink it but never have. Heard so many stories about it.. We haven't yet strong tower. I am still just in the stage of getting her acquainted with the milking thing, she isn't very willing yet. Anyway, she contaminates the milk with her kicking and bucking. To get milk last night, I had to bring the kids up on the milk stand with her so that she thought they were nursing. Once I did that she was calm as could be. She is calming down though, I don't think it will be long before I am able to use the milk for something other than soap! In the meantime, I need to get a soap recipe! Thanks Phil, and Green Acres is the joke 'round here too. Actually, I do need to come up with a herdname; they are registered Nigerian Dwarves. If I'm gonna register the kids, I need a herd name...I'm open for suggestions! Hubby is suggesting The TajHerd, because when we purchased this place last spring it was quite run down, but after 9 months of living in a 25' fifth wheel, he called this The Taj Mahol!

Congrats on the new babies!! We've got a nubian (we think) who is expecting but don't know when. She's getting big and we see lot of movement on her sides. We are way more excited about it than she is. Aren't goats great. I love to pull my chair up by the pen and just watch them play. Such characters. Enjoy those babies (unless you plan to sell or eat them, in that case don't get too close) Tammy

I had a goat once and she only had one baby, but I did try to milk her just to see if I could and I DID !!!! She didn't much like it but I wanted to see if I could. Didn't watch my Granny do it for years for nothing !! LOL. I enjoyed the baby very much though. They would stand @ my door and look in thru the glass when they got out of the pen, couse after they had sampled all my flowers. Eventually I will have them again.

Dap, I have a question for you. Do you want a recipe for using tallow or a recipe for that is called "Vegetarian" ? My recipes using goats milk are "milled" soap recipes. I think I'll start a Soap thread, So I don't hijack your thread here.

Either one-I see lard in the grocery store here-that could be used for tallow, right? As long as the ingrediants are available, I will try different recipes. Since I've never done it before, I'm looking forward to experimenting. I have decided that I am not going to start milking her until after Thanksgiving, I think the kids will be old enough to share then.

Um Dap I think tallow and lard are two different things. When a soap recipe calls for tallow they are talking about the fat from the animale and then you cook it down, skim off any meat products and you get this white tallow. Lard is soft, where tallow is hard after it is cooled. you can get chunks of fat from the butcher, cook it down and skim off any meat product. I do have a recipe that uses tallow and lard too..I'll have to hunt for that recipe. My only concern is the lye. Here in Minnesota you can't buy the canned lye in stores anymore due to the "Meth Labs" is it the same for you in AL? It's the brand name "Red Devil" lye brand that all my recipes call for.

Ahhh, thanks for the input, I didn't realize lard and tallow were different things. I mean, I knew tallow was the raw fat, but I thought lard was the cooked down product! Thanks for the clarification! Anyway, I haven't looked for the "Red Devil" here yet. As a matter of fact, just found out about the brand name today!! But the woman I bought the goats from makes goat milk soap and said she orders her ingrediants online. If I don't find it in the stores here, I will email her and see if she uses it and where she gets it. Thanks for the info...I didn't know they use lye in crystal meth... That stuff is so sad...

Yep Meth is the worst drug cuz you never really get over it and you crave it even if you haven't taken it for along time. People say that you can get hooked on meth the first time you take it. Anyway, could you find out the web site that the lady orders the lye from? I guess I have to do that too now. What I don't gt is what's ging to stop the Meth labs from not ordering it from on line too? The best thing to do is experment with different soap recipes and pick the best one you like. I'llget those recipes on here soon.

Hey DAP, I've never made goat's milk soap before but I've done a little studying on it for when I had the chance. Here's what I got pher ya: It's gonna be long....sorry.
You can use most any cold process soap recipe soap - I don't know why it's called cold process since it is heated but whatever. You'll be using goat's milk in place of the water called for in the recipe. Typically, with the water you gently mix the lye and water (there is a particular way to do this and I can't remember the steps so find good instructions) and get a chemical reaction that heats the solution. With the goats milk, you need to freeze the proper amount of milk first in a zip bag. When you are ready to use it, you want to let it sit out for a bit and kind of mash on it until you get a firm slush. You'll be mixing the lye with this slush and be getting the same warming which will melt the milk and then you follow the directions for the rest of the soap making. The reason for the freezing is to keep the lye from scortching the milk.
Good luck Tammy

Thanks tammy! I just went to the library today and borrowed a soap making book; I was wondering if I could just replace the water with milk. I won't be afraid to just go ahead and try it now!

Hey DAP. My husband wanted to ask if you have the babies and mom seperated from your grown males. As I said, we have some wee ones on the way and they will be our first babies. Actually, we haven't had goats all that long, only about five months so we are learning as we go. Most people in the area seem to just keep everyone together but the males can get pretty aggressive with each other so I'm a little worried about the babies. Just wonderin what your experience has been so far. Thanks for sharing the pics. My gosh they are toooooo cute.
Tammy
