I have a Shih-Tzu that is 6.5 months old. She is the sweetest and cutest little thing. Well, She did the puppy pad thing 'till she was about 2.5 months old and then she got sick. Some diarrhea, then constipation back and forth. Anywhoo, since then, she will not use the puppy pad. We don't have a cage to help out and I don't want her to be trained to go outside. I can't think for the life of me how to get this kid to use the puppy pad! She goes pee-pee in the hallway and poo-poo in the kids' rooms. How do I get her to use her pad? I have tried when she goes on the floor, showing her what she did, doing the "BAD girl" thing and putting her on the pad, to no avail. Is it too late to train her? Hopeless case?

My first question is, why don't you want a fairly good size dog going out? As to the puppy pads, if she somehow belives thats what made her not feel well..........then it is probably a long shot to get her to go back to em'. But dogs are stange in some ways. Trust me my 2 min pinns are a handfull some times, right X

She's not a big dog, only about 7lbs. We moved in here and there is that fencing that is on farms, you know with the big holes and wooden posts...Anyways, she fits through those holes easily and gets out whenever she can, especially when she sees the cats from next door. She has already gotten out to the middle of the street without me knowing anything about it. Bottom line is that I want her to go inside, especially for when winter comes. She is a small dog and the hawks around here tend to try to get them. And that dang fence is a big problem. It's more practical for her to go indoors than out.
I didn't think about the association with the pads and the sickness....Crapola....What to do, what to do?

After second thought, I'd put chicken wire on the bottom to keep her in. Jus stake it down. Thats ifn you mean high tensile fnce.

I was told that when using pads, that you take a bit of urine and soak it into the pad. This way the dog goes back to the scented area... Eventually the pad itself should draw the dog to it.

You might get a bigf dishpan (plastic) and get some dog litter, yes dog litter from Petsmart or somehwere. I had my chihuahua trained to litter box. I put her in and would not let her out until she went. Sometimes I sat in floor holding her in and telling her "Be good firl and go potty" for 30 minutes at a time. When she did go, she got a tiny pupperoni treat. Took about 2 weeks.

How about getting some of those child gates and keeping her in the kitchen. Until she learns to go potty in a doggy litter pan or on the puppy pads. That way the little "messes" would be contained in one area instead of all around the house. You can teach your dog to go potty on demand. I would get some kind of "oder out" stuff sorry can't think of what it is actually called, but it takes the urine order out of whatever the doggy has peed on. I would let the dog go anywhere in the house until she can be trusted to go potty where YOU want her to.

Yeah, I have this stuff I get at Wally World called OUT! Urine and Vomit Stain and Odor Remover. Or something like that. That stuff works wonders!! I've taken to using it on any carpet stain, it works so well. We have cream colored carpet and kids plus the dog, so you know my carpet gets icky sometimes. I'm going to try to find this spray that is supposed to lure the dog to the pad to go and try holding her on the pad 'till she goes...Same as the litter treatment above, but with a pad.

They make dog playpens. I have one, I use it for the rabbit sometimes. I am using it right now for a trio of silkies. It has more than paid for itself in the multi use department. Its a wire metal type panel type fence thingie. They have them at Petsmart. Put the dog in it, with a pad, dont let her have the run of the house! Either that or confine her to a laminate surface like the bathroom (take up the rugs) with a puppy pad. You can get a baby gate to block the doorway where she will still be able to see out. When she goes on the pad, praise her and give her a treat. Give no acknowlegement at all if she goes off the pad, ignore her, clean it up and walk away, no treat, no praise, nothing. She may whine and cry, but she has to learn what is acceptable in the house...do it now, bad habits set up and are hard to break later. Good luck, and let us know what you decide to do.

My dog's name is Sadie, There's a pic of her in my photos I posted in "Phamily Photos....So darn cute you just want to eat her! Which I might be inclined to do, if she don't stop peeing and pooing all over my house!
