Well, as you all know, Mazda passed about a month or so ago. Took me a while to decide what I was gonna do...if I was gonna get another house chicken, if it would even be the same.
I had to go to a friends mothers funeral a week ago yesterday in Phenix City, AL. Well, while down that way, I decided since I was practically up the road from Lagrange, GA, where the guy lived that I bought Mazda from, I would give him a call and see about getting another Blue Wheaton Sport Bantam Roo. He had several, some real young, some young. WOW he has a lot of bantams of all kinds! It was quite a view!
So, he picked out three young lads and put them in viewing cages. I have to say, and I do understand you grow immune to trying to handle a LOT of chickens and you just kinda hold them any which away...but that grabbing and chunking doesn't win any trust from your chickens, so they were all terrified of him, BUT...not of me.
Soon as they settled down I stuck a finger in each cage to see what they would do, only one didnt back away. Then I stuck a hand in, gently, only one didnt back away. Then I touched slowly, didnt back away, so that one was the one to come home and be a lucky house chicken.
Man he is a handful! He is the clingiest little roo, he is still a baby, so he follows everyone everywhere, he even learned how to go up and down the stairs. Follows Shelby upstairs and hangs out with her sometimes. If Ian is on the couch watching tv, he is right there on him. He sleeps on the back of the couch in our bedroom, but if he had his way he would be in the bed with us! He wants attention constantly, which is good, but has its drawbacks when trying to do chores, so I am getting him into the habit of hanging out on the screened in porch while I am doing chores.
While he is the same breed as Mazda, he is nothing like him in personality. He is something else...this breed is just the best breed I have ever known, so sweet! Well, here he is, and yep, they are both really asleep in that picture....he is very young and thats why his comb and wattles look nothing like Mazdas, they will get bigger.
OH, Ian named him "Phoenix" as in the legendary bird that rises from ashes...he said its kinda like Mazda rising to live again having another in the house...
