May I ask what is wrong with the city mulch? I use grass clippings from the city cemetary. i put a layer of black and white news paper down first. keeps any weed seeds from taking hold that are in the grass clippings.

So many people use chemicals on their grass, and I'm trying to stay organic....
but last year I'm sure I brought home some kind of fungus ....or something.... and it infested a lot of my garden, and cut production short for the year! I swore I'd never trust it again!
Maybe the newspaper would help!

Look at the pictures of me and Allison in the Family section. the second picture shows part of the garden, and you can see what it did to the broccoli on the right, and how the leaves of the cucumbers and spaghetti squash becan to brown out and look wierd...

I do 2 crops of broccolli a year, they just don't last all summer. Where are you? It may be the cuckes and zukes were getting old too. I know some areas plant them twice also. If you had a fungus from the compost your tomatoes would have gotten it.
One year i bought all my gardening stuff from one place and after awhile everything was covered with a black slime. I guess the best thing to do is use your own grass clippings, you know what is in them, as far as chemicals go. My problem is I don't get enough for my 2000 square foot garden. Those are nice carrots. Mine last year only got about 3 inches long. Not sure what happened. i planted 2 times in different places. I am trying a different kind this year.

I'm real careful about leaves and grass clippings unless I know exactly what they are using for fert and weed control. some of the herbicides are systemic and long lasting. They could have passed on to your crops. :boese3:

Yea, I also heard that putting too much nitrogen-containing grass on, can actually deplete the nutrients in the soil...

A fellow Master gardener, purchased both Compost and grass clippings from the City site for a Floral display at the township hall...the plants she raised herself, died within 1 month. The Compost, wasn't fully decomposed and the grass clippings , well they were from lawns all over the city...Herbicides can and will carry over and as Seadog said, can be Very long lasting. Not to mention some very high doses of Pesticides, such as diazinon, malithion...etc. I believe from the photos songbird, without a closeup, Looks like you could have had Angular leaf spot, complicated by downy mildew. :4-dontkno
