Yay! our garden is plowed!! We don't have a tractor or even a tiller and the past few yrs we couldn't find anyone to plow or till our garden. But today a friend came and plowed it for us!! I am so excited. Not gonna be a big one. Just cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and lettuce, maybe some peppers. But I am so happy to have a garden again!!

Congrats! Mine is so small, but I'd be lost without it. Will you start your tomatoes and peppers from seed or buy plants?

I bought plants back in...the eighties, I guess. We had some good gardens then too. There's plenty of time to work on your soil, etc., then just drop the plants in. Hope you have the best garden ever.

Buying plants and growing your own veggies is still Far, Far Healthier and in most cases, Tastier than buying Supermarket stuff! At least you will have your own garden Lucy!

It seems I always end up buying tomato seeds, because mine never dry out right, and I guess that's the same as buying already started plants. I've only had 6 tomato plants to sprout this year so if I end up planting more tomatoes it will be with bought plants.

Bestofour your seeds never dry out right? There must be something your doing wrong sweetie!! We need to fix this because after you dry your seeds, you can keep them forever!! You can winter sow them and they will not need anything till they get replanted into the garden.... Oh my oh my!!!

I didn't mean to say store-bought plants are somehow inferior or anything. Sometimes there is less selection. I think the reason I started with seeds was I had Romas and wanted to save seeds to plant the following year.

I started when I wanted seeds to my black tomatoes Have to think of the name of them now .... I don't even have any of the seeds left ... I should get more so I can save some. My only problem with store bought , and it's not the plants fault is: We have gone to the same place for YEARS to get our plants, well then they sold out!! So we went and our red bell peppers were yellow banana peppers , out Roma's were something eles, our egg plants ended out being lil round black balls. Well we figured disgruntled workers, we tried them for a couple more years and the same thing. Daves cousins run a really big huge green house. But they are so dang pricey , but at least you know what your getting!!! And they have been carrying black tomatoes...

When I went to Lowe's yesterday they had 1 type of tomato. I don't know what happened to choices. Very good reason to dry seeds unless you want Better Boy Big Beef or something like that and nothing else.
I just lay my seeds on a paper plate and leave them on the kitchen counter until they dry. It usually takes about 2 weeks. Then I put them in a ziplock bag.

Do you get the jell stuff off of them? You soak them in water for a couple days , then rinse ,put them thru a wire colander , kinda scrape them against the wire gently to get all the jell stuff out from around them. Then spread them out on a paper plate to dry

I am so glad your gonna be able to have a garden this year to. Mine is small and boy does it keep me busy, especially come harvest time. Years ago I did a picture tutorial on saving tomato seeds and the process. Phil locked it so not to lose it. It can be a little work saving the seeds but like someone else said you have a bigger selection than at a box store. Do keep us posted on your progress, with pics if u can.
Here, I am starting to see more heirloom tomato plants available. Like Marvins and Walmart offer them now which is wonderful to me. The other day I bought a yellow Pear tomato that had 3 plants in the pot, one I wanted to seed out but didn't. Anyway, good luck with the garden.

here is a site that shows pictures, the only thing is they don't explain that drying is very important, they are dry when they don't stick together anymore... making sure they are dry before you put them in plastic is very important. Or they will mold and kill the seeds. my theory is if I think they are dry, I let them set a few more days... mrbrownthumb.blogspot.com/2010/09/how-to-save-tomato-seeds.html

I wash them but don't soak them. Thanks for the info. When i save mine, i scoop all the seeds, guck and all into cups, fill part way with water, and let them sit for a few days, they stink so place somwhere where the smell wont bug anyone, scoop out the mold and rinse thoroughly, and i dry mine on coffee filters, i grab a couple packs at the dollar store, i find if i use paper towels, they sometimes stick.

Soaking them gets all that jell stuff off, If that is left on it can sometimes mold or go rancid and make the seed go bad. It is important to get that off. Then after all that you do have to make sure they are very dry Just don't let your dog jump up and knock them all over the Table lol .... I have never let mine get as moldy as some of the pics show ... But I must be doing something right

That's a fine start Lucy. Sauerkraut and Cabbage Rolls are two of my favourite things I was asked by one of my gardening students Mom's the other day about what to plant in a tiny raised bed? I told her even if it's just two tomato plants or a few rows of lettuce, it's fresh, homegrown produce and you made it happen.

Our cabbage plants are looking good, have been eating green onions from the garden. Our Tomato plants look good. Lettuce, radishes and cucumbers are coming up. The rhubarb looks ok. So I am happy. My MIL has tommy toe plants and gonna get some of those and plant a couple rows of corn. I walk up and look at it every day and pull weeds here and there. Wish I had room for a huge garden.
