Yeah I know it is early with harvest in full swing but what better time than October to talk about planting next years patch .What ones to grow? Well I have on hand is Winter Luxury , Howden , Long Island Cheese , OL Zeb's and Field Trip Hybrid. Also have Kabocha Squash which is a Japanese pumpkin. The Giants will not be in the mix however do to space limits.I think I can get away with growing Winter Luxury and Kabocha on the fence or a trellis with support slings for each pumpkin so the weight does not snap the stem off the vine. For folks not familiar with Ol Zeb's or Field Trip here is some of the info.
105 Days. Field Trip is an appropriately named variety for anyone catering to school tours at their farm market. Field Trip produces 5-7 lb. fruit with deep orange color, moderate ribbing, and distinctive, long, well-rooted handles. The attractive, slightly flattened fruit are the ideal size for children to carry from the field and then home from school. Semi-vining plants have intermediate resistance to powdery mildew.
Ol Zeb's has a unique florescent orange color with a long wispy handle that gives it an heirloom quality. Ol Zeb's is a high yielder.
Lots of cool pumpkins out there. Two that I don't have at the moment are Wolf and Phat Jack. Like these two because they have nice big handles . There are two others I would like to try too. Mr. Wrinkles and Mrs Wrinkles.
Mr. Wrinkles is a large Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin with wrinkled and bumpy skin. It has a strong handle that can hold its heavy weight. Color: Deep orange Days To Maturity: 110 Size W x H & Weight: 20-30 lbs; 13 x 10.5
Mrs. Wrinkles
A smaller companion to Mr. Wrinkles, with deeply wrinkled ribs and a thick, nicely embedded handle. Mrs. Wrinkles was able to tolerate stress in our trials better than Mr. Wrinkles. Even with less than ideal conditions, she still developed more wrinkles! We found the height to be variable, with some attractive squattier shapes. Fruit was prolific on a very strong vine. Color: Deep orange Days To Maturity: 110 days Size W x H & Weight: 10-12 x 9-10", 20-30 lbs
No matter what pumpkins you decide on you gotta admit there is a variety for everyone.

hey Wrennie you should try Winter Luxury or Kabocha . Both are about the same size and make excellent goodies.IMO these two along with sugar pie are the top 3 for pie and other baked goods and soup.

Another pumpkin has come to my attention that might be nice to try. Cronus F1. While I know it is a hybrid the description sounds impressive. 25-60 pounds with nice big stems. The only companies that I have seen it listed with is Harris Seed Co and Osborne Seed Co.Anyone else see it listed maybe in smaller size packet?

I may just do that Phil. From what Harris says Cronus is on back order till mid February. In the mean time I do have Field Trip and Ol' Zeb along with Winter Luxury,Howden , Long Island Cheese and Kabocha. Also one of my sources on Ebay has a giant called Titan. Only prob there is I doubt I will have room for it and the source is in Ukrain so it would be order at your own risk due to customs possibly getting there hands on the seeds. I have ordered from a Russian seller before with no prob but you never know.

I would like to try growing punkins also, but as of right now space is at a premium and there are so many farmers in our area that grow them that it doesn't make sense to try to grow for market. The space we have is used up for produce that brings some profit, which this season was a bust because of deer damage. Punkins are to me a fun crop to grow in a garden setting. I just don't have the space. Wish I did!

That is about it. for us it is a fun crop but also for some holiday goodies. I figure max I have room for four hills 2 Jack O Lanterns and two pie with a few jack be little and baby boo on the fence. You see me mentioning several varieties but the plan is to plant more than one variety per hill at max of four plants in the hill. I know four plants per hill goes against what is recommended but that has always worked for me.Haven't decided fore sure what ones to grow but should be an interesting little pumpkin patch.

Yes that is the only way I have to look at it,but depending on how business goes I may just try some punkin growing. I need some fun things to do before I'm on the other side of the dirt making compost.

Yes JC that is one reason I like to grow pumpkins cuz they are fun to grow.I find myself almost decided on what I will grow now just a couple more sites to look at. but so far it looks like I will get my pumpkins that I don't have from Jung and Johnny's. I trust both companies as the seeds I have gotten from them in the past never failed me and their prices are fair. Jung has all three of the Wrinkles series and all three of the Super Freak (warty ) series. If I get these it will be the first time I grow them.Always hard to decide cuz every year there is something new.
