Well, folks.... it is that time of year I bit the bullet and bought a greenhouse(small- about 6X8 maybe? I'm no good at measuring lol) and have my seeds started... Once I can remember to use my camera instead of my phone, I will post pics. I will be starting a "from scratch" garden in untouched dirt, so this year might wind up being a bust, but at least I will have fun. hpltr Hopefully I can keep the cats out of it .... The garden is close to the dog pen, so lets hope I'm just glad to be playing in the dirt again!

Right now I am feeling a bit like an idiot because I did not check the soil quality BEFORE starting seeds or anything and when I just checked my potential site.... ALL SAND dtb Looks like I will be buying a LOT of dirt.... Penny, is there a way to send pics by phone since the update or do I still have to use a host site like photobucket?

ALL SAND dtb Looks like I will be buying a LOT of dirt.... Penny, is there a way to send pics by phone since the update or do I still have to use a host site like photobucket? Tonya..I don't know anything.. absolutely nothing about phones..But here is a link to the Proboards App support..I see a couple posts about attaching pics..hope this helps support.proboards.com/board/12/mobile-app-supportas for your soil..I lived in a place once that the soil was 85% sand...grew great carrots...it did dry out quick..it was darn easy to work though.. sandy soil has some advantages: Root Crops...carrots, beets, radishes, etc. do better in sandy soil than in clay soil Herbs... or most of em' do well in sandy soils. and you don't have much worry (or none) about any root rot Sandy gardens dry out quick..hence the no root rot factor...so use mulch to conserve water. How sandy is it.. dig a shallow hole (shovel deep) fill it with water...If you can see it drain..then you have extremely sandy soil...if it takes 3-4 minutes..I'd go with it and mulch well, add compost and by next year you'll have great soil, that is loose and will drain well... determine soil type..this is a easy guide (.pdf file) www.greenlearningstation.org/resources/1/Soil%20texture%20by%20feel%20chart.pdfso instead of hauling lots of soil..haul some compost... one thing that is a bad thing...nutrients leach out quickly in sandy soil..so..compost, and good feeding practices are needed I know the boys down home farm on pure sand and they say once Ya learn how..it's the best??

Thanks Phil! I know I added bagged garden soil to my sandy yard the first year I was on here and my tomatoes were like 7 ft tall... I will try the water trick and check out the link you gave!

Well, according to the chart thingy, I have Loamy sand... it drains well, but stays wet. It looks like I will go with compost and mulching. I can't wait to turn the ground and watch stuff grow! I have gotten a little bit of a late start, but it'll be OK!

The only thing I have in the actual ground is green peas that are coming up and potatoes, which I planted this morning. I don't think that you're late.

Very nice!! Botesbabe I get my pics from my phone to my computer by Bluetooth. I turn on my bluetooth to my computer and my bluetooth on my phone and I use Drop box to store them. From Drop box I take them to Photo Bucket. I am sure there are easier ways. But thats the way I was taught. Looks like you figured it out tho Very nice job on that garden already!

Ok, I DO need suggestions- I did the soil test thingy that Phil gave me a link to and I have loamy sand soil. I plan to ammend the soil, but since I don't generally do the "organic " thing so much, I am torn on how to ammend it. Should I go with a few bags of garden soil with the fertilizer already added or should I go with some topsoil and composted cow manure? Price really isn't an issue, because the cost is basically the same. I am going to mulch with hay/straw, but just dont know which will help for better growth. Suggestions??

I realized I don't have any marigolds. Thanks. Got to get those started.
I would use garden soil with fertilizer but I suppose that's not totally organic.

I don't have a preference of organic or not, just not sure which will help more. I have never really had this type of soil... I may go with half and half lol

I found this "The best way to improve a sandy loam soil for gardening is to mix organic matter into the soil. Incorporating a 2- to 4-inch layer of compost or peat moss over the area can significantly improve the ability of your sandy loam soil to hold nutrients and water." The article also says it's a good soil because it has some clay that will help it hold water but not enough clay to cause it to clump.

I was leaning heavily towards mixing half topsoil and half composted cow manure and then mulching with straw. I believe I will mark and till the area tomorrow and then go to Lowe's to get my ammendments to add on Wednesday. I can't wait to be digging in the dirt!!
