I thought about trying a few aluminum pie tins tied on the fence, they bang in the breeze and have been known to scare away black birds. Thanks deb, now I have to go through my DVD's and CD's and decide which ones to use

They get used to monotonus things. The CD's and the pie plates will work fer a while. They just learn that no matter what they see, it'll be OK. Starlings are the worst! Dang cow birds!

I made a mistake a few years back... I was making these wind chimes out of used saw blades.... They sound pretty when they bang together... honest dont laugh....
Well I hung them off the pole of one of my mailbox feeders... They stayed away from that mailbox for a while.. couldn't figure it out.. then it dawned on me it was the new chimes.... I liked the look so I left em and just put up more feeders...
Now that is my best feeder. Saw chimes and all .. Your right they will stay away from it for awhile but they will get used to it.....
Buy one of them fake owls from the garden centers or wal mart and put up poles here and there... go out at night and move the owl to diffrent spots around the garden.. that might work.
