I live in the central San Joaquin Valley, CA & am going to plant some beets tomarrow, the 2nd. I have them soaking. I also have growing; artichokes, asparagus, beets broccoli, garlic, onions. There has been some chard growing volunteer for years. 'Chokes' do better here with P.M. shade so they are being planted next to the fence. We have been hauling mulch from a neighbor's stable, all walkways etc. covered deeply. 60+Y/O redwood grapestakes fence-off the garden. The borders are wildflowers, mostly CA poppies, they will be in bloom soon. There is an 8ft grape trellis around the perimiter. The garden is around 3,500sf or so.
