Since it's been so 'balmy' in PA this past few weeks, Honey has been making noises about constructing a really (REALLY) simple cold frame.
Is it too late to build one? The one in mind was either 'the four hay bales in a square with an old window on top' deal or actually making a wooden frame and using the window for the lid.
Or has the ground just gotten too cold to actually ever warm up enough to sprout some lovely lettuces? It's been in the upper 30's to high 40's here for several weeks now.
Or should I just calm down and go back to fantasizing over my seed catalogues?

Bleu if ya got access to a themometer you could check the soil temp! Here in IL its been gray for almost 2 weeks straight! No sun what feels like 100% humidity! Miserable! If ya do the cold frame and it dont work what would ya really be out? A few minutes of work,a little seed... I'd say try it!

I have 2 big oblong cow troughs filled with soil and compost in the front yard, and on top of these, we have glass storm doors (throw-a-ways) and they make great cold frames. I generally throw in lettuce seeds and add a little water at times, and in the spring, I have great lettuce. When spring gets here, I usually fill them with little onion plants and we eat off them into early summer.
